35 Denton Daytime Programming

We are officially one week away from 35 Denton, and their team is buttoning everything up as we speak to make sure you have the best weekend ever. The fest will host more than 100 different bands in a three-day time span, and will also include several different non-music related events including panel discussions, yoga on the square, a film contest, and even an Instagram walk hosted by yours truly.

Below is a comprehensive list of the official 35 Denton 2016 daytime programming offerings. The information will also be available in the printed program guide during festival weekend.  You can still buy your wristbands, which range from $25 - $65, through PreKindle. All of the daytime programming events are free except for the VIP Party at Mockingbird Sound and the Cigarbox Guitar Workshop.

Daytime Panels

FLOWER POWER: LEVELING UP YOUR BOOKING, UNT On The Square, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Does your band feel stuck in its booking; endlessly playing the same circuit of clubs and venues? Is hiring an agent or manager beneficial? Curious as to why talent buyers balk at your rider? How do you stand out and hit that “next level” of gigs? Join us for a discussion of thoughts and answers to these questions from various representatives of the “next level”. Panelists include:
Joe Cepeda Overman, Talent Buyer, Granada Theater
Amy Miller, Program Director of KXT 91.7FM Radio
Gavin Mulloy, Creative Director, The Bomb Factory & Trees
Elia Najera, booking manager for Sofar Sounds in Denton
Christopher Walker (moderator), talent buyer for Andy’s Bar & Grill and member of the 35 Denton Booking Team

RECORDING IN THE AGE OF EVERYTHING, UNT On The Square, 1:30 PM - 2:30 PM
Since the last turn of the Century, the means and access to recording technology of sufficient quality has become incredibly decentralized. With enough talent operating the knobs and faders, a bedroom studio can garner international acclaim for under a few hundred dollars. At the same time, the impact that producers and professional studio engineers have over music has never diminished. Representatives of recording houses of all sizes from across the metroplex will discuss what it means to expertly craft the tunes that bring us here in “the Age of Everything”. Panelists include:
Michael Briggs, Civil Recording
Brack Cantrell, Dojo Baby Records
Justin Collins, Satisfactory Recording Co.
Erik Herbst, Panhandle House Recording Studios
Justin Lemons, Infinite Ohm Records
McKenzie Smith, Redwood Studios
Paul Slavens (moderator), local music scene aficionado and host of KXT’s “The Paul Slavens Show”

LAWYERS ARE YOUR FRIENDS, UNT On The Square, 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM
This introduction to legal issues in the arts will help you answer questions such as: Who owns the stuff I create? What if I work with others? Do I need a lawyer? How do I protect my brand? Sampling - that’s “fair use,” right? Can’t we all just get along? Join us for a discussion covering copyright law, trademark law, business structure, and other legal basics. Participants in the panel include:
D'Lesli Davis, Fulbright & Jaworski LLP
Kevin Harrison, Kevin Harrison Law
Evan Stone, Stone & Vaughan, PLLC

Workshop

Saturday, March 12, 2016

CIGAR BOX GUITAR WORKSHOP,  PAAC, 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Cigar box guitars are American folk instruments with a unique history. Born out of necessity by poor musicians who could not afford to buy guitars, they innovated and created instruments from found objects and made their songs heard.

Take part in this tradition and build your own cigar box guitar! In this workshop each student will build his or her own one-of-a-kind instrument from a real cigar box kit custom-crafted by local luthier Tommy Miller at the American Folk Instruments workshop in Denton, TX. Students choose a kit, customize it and assemble it into a fully functional, ultra-cool 4-string guitar that is sure to turn heads and make great songs.

Spaces are limited, so register by clicking the link and become part of the American Folk Instruments family! The Workshop will take place Saturday March 12th at The Patterson-Appleton Center for the Visual Arts (GDAC) during the 35 Denton Music Festival. You can buy tickets here.
