In light of favorite venues closing and a Music Town Hall being held, a call has emerged among the community to promote all genres and media of art in the local scenes. The Dentonite’s Arts Editor, Mateo Granados, hopes to advocate this idea by showcasing a wide variety of arts at a show called Colere on Saturday, September 17th at Taps ‘N Caps.

Colere means “to cultivate” or “promote growth”. Granados hopes that his show will bring the community together to promote the growth of an all-inclusive arts scene. He also hopes that through the wide variety of art available, the audience will be inspired to try something different. The show will include a musical performance, visual art, modern dance, and several short film screenings.

Colere opens with the music of Dallas electro dream-pop artist Sudie with walls featuring visual art from Beth Yturri, Abigail Firth, Katie Montgomery, and more. Reyna Mondragon will perform improvised modern dance accompanied by Pepe Valdez on  guitar. Kylie Mclaughlin will also be applying unique face paint designs at $5 a session.

Two short films will also be screened: The Struggle and Out. Written and directed by Nick Coker, The Struggle addresses the issue of crippling student debt in exchange for a “normal adult life”. Out was penned by Chelsea Beeson and covers a day in the life of a transgender teen facing non-acceptance at his high school. Crew from each film will be on-hand to participate in a Q&A.

In addition, there will be art for sale at the show. A percentage of the proceeds made from art sales will be donated to the Greater Denton Arts Council. Colere is on September 17th from 9 P.M. to Midnight at Taps ‘N Caps off Hickory st. Cover is $3 for 18+ and $1 for 21+.
