Gallery Report - January 27th, 2017

The first month is just about over. Is this year better than 2016 yet? There is a plethora of new art to check out with GDAC in full swing and Denton Black Film Festival currently presenting Christopher Blay's work at UNT on the Square. Winter is still cancelled, so get out there and see some art.

Currently featured here is the work of owner Christie Wood, who has assembled a variety of wood-framed stained glass panels.  

The Bearded Monk

This wall features 3 artists previously featured in the Dentonite Tuesday Art List. There is the surreal art of Beth Yturri, the chilling moods of Ana Dria's digital photography, and the eye-popping paintings of Sanford Black. 

Brick Haus Collective

OPEN CALL: Brick Haus is currently accepting submissions for a one-week solo exhibition in Mid-May. Visit their proposals webpage for more details.

The Chestnut Tree

These walls currently feature the watercolor paintings of local artist Jo Williams. Grab a bite to eat and enjoy the view of the award-winning Williams's work spanning the past decade.

Patterson-Appleton Arts Center

Composite of the Soul ft. Justin Archer, Erik Beruvides, and Dan Black
Three local artists teamed up to present a 3-dimensional installation utilizing wood sculptures, large-scale murals, and audio/video elements. Composite of the Soft provokes thought on building towards a better future without forgetting the past. The Dentonite recently stopped by to capture a photo essay on the exhibit. Walk through the Festival Hall during the next 4 months for a free viewing.

VAST presents the 11th annual 125-Mile Visual Arts Exhibition
Gough Gallery
The Visual Arts Society of Texas presents this juried collection of work featuring artists who live within 125 miles of Denton. This exhibit is free to the public and available for viewing until February 25th. 

Mulberry Street Cantina

Daniel Christopher McCullaugh's surreal portraits on the wall at Mulberry Cantina are reminiscent of what it's like to stare at your own reflection in a crystal clear lake before dropping a pebble into the water. 

tAd Gallery

tAd continutes their Outskirts: Bodies, Places, & Identities series with the updated exhibition, "is this (not) a woman." The new exhibition features the works of four artists: Mētra Saberova, Tae Kyung Seo, Ana Treviño, and Deirdre Vertucci. Each artist presents a diverse set of media that are wonderfully complex and not shy about confronting tensions underlying societal norms. Outskirts is a series that explores politics and women's issues as told by artists from diverse backgrounds.

This is one of the newest homes to artists and musicians. Currently featured is a set of photos printed on wood that sell as low as $20 a piece. Stop to consider a piece of art the next time you get a growler filled here.

Where do heaven and the ocean meet? Sharon Lee Hart's ethereal series, Accoring to the Sky, is currently on display as part of the Joyce Elaine Grant photography exhibition.

UNT on the Square

Christopher Blay presents KWTXR as part of the Denton Black Film Festival that launched this week. Blay has a talented for using different forms of media to express his message. Make your way to the back where you'll find a TV and a pair of headphones to get the full experience of this exhibit.

West Oak Coffee Bar

If you like pups then you'll adore one of Jan Olivas' large acrylic paintings in the back hallway. Olivas is a mother of two living in Aubrey, and she has recently began practicing woodburning to create aromatherapy necklaces. 

Also featured above the couch area is English-born artist, Dilusionall (Dilrani Kaur). When not creating visual art, Kaur is involved in music and dance. Faith, nature, and symmetry are hallmarks of her work.
