Poetry Slam Royale Invites Poets to Share

The phrase "poetry slam royale" evokes images of WWE competitors using the ring to read poetry that may or may not be better than words shared by Vogons.* What Artists Enclave of Denton County and 7feathers aim to do on March's First Friday is give talented local poets a chance to win a cash prize in an evening that will also host an open mic session at Agua Dulce.

"I am all about giving artists an opportunity to earn from the practice of what they enjoy doing while also communicating relevant, powerful messages for audiences," says Artist's Enclave co-founder Susan C. Davis. Poets who want to compete should hurry up and fill out their registration form. The deadline to submit is Tuesday, February 21st, and there's no submission fee. Poets should prepare three poems with each one being less than three minutes.

Selections will be made by Nancy K. Carpenter and the theme is "Lend Me Your Ears." Expect content to cover the dynamics of how communication can be simple or complex in expressing thoughts and emotions to others.

As seen during the Denton Black Film Festival, the slam scene is growing in DFW and on Denton's college campuses. Artists Enclave hosts monthly events geared towards bringing regional artists together. This is their first time holding a competitive poetry slam event, but this is their second annual Spring show featuring spoken word performers.

*The great Lanny Poffo is both an accomplished wrestler and poet. The fine performers of WWE and other wrestling organizations should not be equated with Vogons.
