DAM Awards 2019: Non-Profit
This city is fortunate to have some amazing non-profits doing life-changing work .
I’ll only be covering the 5 that are nominated in this category, but please know there are so many more that deserve recognition.
CASAs role in the community is to train and support adults who are passionate in a child’s right to be safe, to be treated with dignity and to learn and grow in the security of a loving family. These court appointed special advocates volunteer to serve as the listener and voice for abused and neglected children removed from their home by Child Protective Services. One of their roles is to supervise visitation with the child and their parent/guardian and to also make a recommendation to the presiding judge of a specific case as to what permanent placement would be best for the child.
Denton County Friends of the Family
DCFOF is clear in their mission, “We provide compassionate, comprehensive services to those impacted by rape, sexual abuse, and domestic violence, while partnering with our community to promote safety, hope, healing, justice, and prevention.” DCFOF maintains a 24/7 crisis line for victims of sexual assault, sexual abuse and domestic violence. They work to get the victim out of their current situation and provide them tools, not only to emotionally and physically heal, but how to move forward.
The Denton Music and Art Collective works to support the creative community of Denton by improving the livelihood of that community. Focusing on healthcare, which may not be an affordable option for a musician or artist supporting themselves through their own creative endeavors, DMAC works to bring more awareness to those resources that are readily available to our creative community. Their main mission is to offer subsidize healthcare for local musicians and artists and they currently subsidize healthcare for about 20 musicians.
Friends with Benefits is non-profit working to raise awareness and funds for other non-profits. Friends with Benefits, get it? This organization host events throughout the year to help raise funds for other local causes, such as We Denton Drag It, She-Rock, Keep Denton Warm and West Hickory St Oktoberfest 5k. They have a music scholarship that benefits high school, college students and local musicians alike. FWB spreads the love across the community, doing what it can to support those causes that need a little boost.
