Weekend Update: May 5 - 8, 2016

There’s so much going on in town this weekend, y’all! There’s the Mudbug Boil, Denton Community Market, a slew of shows—and Saturday, May 7 is Election Day in Denton! No matter what your views, we here at The Dentonite encourage EVERYONE to get out there and exercise your right to vote! Need to recap about the candidates? Thursday, May 5

Miroslav Penkov: Presentation and Reading
UNT on the Square, 7 pm
Penkov, an Associate Professor at UNT, will be doing a reading from his novel “Stork Mountain.” He’ll also be presenting photography and glean some of the history behind the research he did in Bulgaria while putting the book together. For those aspiring writers out there, you really shouldn’t miss out. FREE to get in!

Killer’s Mic Night
Killer’s Tacos, 6:30 pm
Come get your tacos! And while you’re at it, grab some free beer and free entertainment, too. It’s gonna be a variety show for the masses, and you can perform whatever your heart desires; be sure to sign up early.

DCYP Monthly Mixer
OSDH, 5:30 pm
DCYP stands for the Denton County Young Professionals and tonight they’re hosting a meet-and-greet with some of the local officials running for office this weekend. You don’t have to be a member to attend, just come out, have a beer, and hang out with some cool folks.

Criminal Birds, Cozy Hawks, Particular People
Dan’s Silverleaf, 8 pm
Come join in on this second part of the Criminal Bird’s live record session. They’ll have Dan’s mic’ed up so the crowd will be recorded, too. Opening are fellow Denton acts Cozy Hawks and Particular People. It’s only cinco bucks for Cinco de Mayo to get in.

3rd Party, OG Garden, Konklin, Boii Stuff
RGRS, 9 pm
Bretheren of the Hip Hop and Rap movement, feast your ears on this major line-up of some awesome local acts. For only $1/$3, you’ll see four bands, including a reunion set by Boii Stuff. You won’t want to miss it.

Friday, May 6

May Mixer Meetup
Sweetwater Tavern & Grill, 5:30 pm–6:45 pm
Meet with local Denton artists at this mixer - for not only artists but arts enthusiasts, too - hosted by Artists Exclave of Denton County. There will be free appetizers provided by Sweetwater and after the mixer head over to the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center to view works by Bob Chilton. Learn more about it all here.

International Nightscapes: Bob Chilton Opening Reception
Patterson-Appleton Arts Center, 6 pm
View photographic art by Dallas photographer Bob Chilton. For decades he’s produced some of the most breathtaking images, and in his portfolio “Nightscapes,” you’ll get to see some of his most extraordinary work to date. View his works online.

KUZU Presents Ethereal & the Queer Show, FILTH, Pleasure Principle, Vulgar Fashion
RGRS, 9 pm
Ethereal & the Queer Show is presenting their album release—FINALLY—just in time to catch Rubber Gloves before it bids a sad farewell. Headlining tonight is Vulgar Fashion. $5–$7 cover all goes toward the KUZU kickstarter.

Bukkake Moms, Ccds Death Squad, Daniel Ryan
Pink Cactus, 9 pm
Before you hit the KUZU fundraiser, check out this FREE house show. Of course, they’ll be taking donations to support the traveling bands—Ccds Death Squad is from St. Louis.

Glow Yoga and Hoop Workshop
South Lakes Park, 7 pm
A hooping workshop and yoga class under the twilight supporting the Denton roller derby team, the Fighting Unicorns. They’ll be taking donations, all going toward helping the team financially on their tour. Workshop starts at 7, all-levels yoga class starts at 8.

We Can’t Even “Handle” It
Audacity Brew House, 6 pm
All weekend, art work by Jessica Neihardt and Lydia Low will be on display while you sip some delicious local brews at a dollar off. It’s free to attend and you get to walk away with a free handcrafted pint glass.

Saturday, May 7

UNT Media Arts Department Advanced Film Screening Spring 2016
UNT Lyceum, 6:30 pm
Nine films by UNT advanced film students will be showing tonight on campus. It’s a fairly formal occasion, so come dressed to the nines! It’s free to get in.

Denton Mudbug Crawl Charity 5K, Presented by Corona Light
Lucky Lou’s, 10 am
The annual Mudbug Boil is here, and in conjunction, Corona Light is sponsoring a 5K to raise money for local charities. It starts on the festival grounds and climbs through the UNT campus. Order your tickets before the run and save five bucks. $40 at the event.

Star Party: A Night Under the Stars
Rafes Urban Astronomy Center, 7 pm
After you’re done getting Mudbug Boiled, bring the family out for this great community event. For only $5, you’ll get a chance to check out the meteor shower, build your own comet, partake in live music, and feast on pizza provided by Mellow Mushroom. Plus, there’ll be a raffle at the end for Six Flags tickets and a Denton Water Works pass.

Moonshine Shack!
Moonshine Shack, 9 pm
House show. Eight bands. Thrashing. FREE. If you’ve got nothing better to do on Friday night and you’re super broke, don’t miss this. Bring your own beverages. 725 Texas St., off Mingo by the golf course.

Good music and good people, y’all. $5 gets you a chance to see Billy Ratcliff & the Economy after a five-year hiatus. This is a can’t miss opportunity.

Sunday, May 8

An Evening of Romantic Hausmusik
Denton Women’s Club, 7 pm
Did you know Denton has a Bach Society chapter? Sounds pretty fancy. Take in the classical sounds of Mendelssohn, Brahms, and Sullivan, performed by the winners of The Denton Bach Society’s Young Artist Competition. In honor of Mother’s Day, there will be a wine reception following the performances. $15 for students, $20 for everyone else.

Chase Whale Presents ASIAN MOVIE MADNESS
Mulberry Street Cantina, 7 pm
Chase is back at it, this time presenting a FREE movie screening of Kill Zone 2—a pre-showing before it’s even released! Don’t worry if you didn’t see Kill Zone 1, this movie isn’t a follow-up. Well Go USA Entertainment has provided Chase with free swag to get out, plus they will be handing out popcorn for free. Check out the trailer here.
