"Fuzzy" Newquist Brings Party Politics into City Council Race
As the upcoming runoff election for At-Large Place 5 on City council draws near, Aaron 'Fuzzy' Newquist has sent mailers to voters warning that his opponent, Dr. Deb Armintor, is dangerous due to her "liberal ideas." Newquist's attempt to place voters into party lines in a non-partisan city council race includes labeling Armintor as "Dangerous Deb."
Newquist particularly focused his message by sending a letter to Robson Ranch homes which outlined him as a vote for a conservative.
While the firsts four paragraphs are standard campaign literature, the fifth paragraph takes a turn describing Armintor as a leftist after highlighting his own conservative acumen.”
It reads as follows:
"Ms. Amintor says she isn't partisan, yet she is actively working with Indivisible Denton and other liberal groups to take control of Denton City Council with the stated goal of making Denton a sanctuary city. In a candidate forum she even stated her preference that Denton become a sanctuary city, and she supports taxpayer funded dual language programs for our local school.
Put plainly Ms. Armintor is a liberal Democrat with far-left policy ideas that are out of step with the people of the City of Denton and Robson Ranch.
We simply cannot afford to allow our city to follow the lead of other liberal cities around our state and nation, but if Ms. Armintor is elected, that is exactly the direction she will take us."
Dentonites outside of Robson Ranch have been receiving a mailer that mostly presents Newquist's own experience in business and leadership roles. It also highlights a list of endorsements that includes current city council member Don Duff.
But it also makes a point to be wary of "Dangerous Deb's radical ideas."
Election day will tell if Newquist's strategy is beneficial, but previous city council candidate Jodi Vicars-Nance has since revoked her endorsement and has taken a neutral stance (although her name is listed on the mailer.) Before the mailers went out, Newquist had been receiving criticism for his decision to not attend an NAACP forum to which both he and Armintor were invited, despite the NAACP's willingness to accommodate Mr. Newquist's schedule.
At this time both campaigns have declined to comment to The Dentonite on this matter.
