As always, Dentonites, our celebratory city has plenty of events to help you soak up the vibes of the weekend (and maybe shake off the rain). Whether you’re looking for a party, a purpose, or a plan, Denton has got you covered. Take a gander at our little list, curated to help point you in the right direction.

Thursday, January 12

Free Community Yoga
Kundalini Yoga Ashram, 10 AM
Stretch your stuff and center yourself with Karma Yoga Denton as they host a community yoga class at Kundalini Community Ashram (The Yoga Hut). Hosted by Karma Yoga’s own Kelbi Callaway, this FREE tutorial welcomes all levels of yogis and non-yogis alike. Don’t have a yoga mat? Fret not, as extra mats will be available to borrow! Let your energy flow, Dentonites.

Never Friends, Strongbad, Pizza Planet, Unicorndog
Killer’s Tacos, 7 PM
Kick off your weekend with tacos (killer ones at that) and live music. Denton band Never Friends will deliver their carefree, “just singing about life” attitude to the Killer’s Tacos room along with Strongbad. Pizza Planet and Unicorndog have made the trek from College Station to share the stage. No cover, though donations for the touring bands are much appreciated. Music starts at 7 PM.

Friday, January 13

Friends With Benefits Benefit Show
BackYard on Bell, 7 PM
Join Friends With Benefits—a local nonprofit that benefits North Texas charitable organizations—at BackYard on Bell as they host their monthly benefit show. This month’s eclectic lineup features music from Mother Tongues, Thrill Bill, Jo Higginbotham, and more! The entirety of your $5 entry fee will be donated to Friends With Benefits and to the North Texas Music Scholarship. Good music for a good cause? See you there, Denton.  `

Eddie Kautsch’s Birthday Throwdown
Andy’s Bar, 9 PM
Celebrate the life of Eddie Kautsch aka Eddie Malfunction as this famed festival runner, gifted ghostwriter, and hip hop enthusiast hits the dirty 30! Wax Logic and Frank Ponecall are set to perform, along with D-Mar and Chris Jessup. Whether you’re a friend, an acquaintance, or a perfect stranger, all are welcome. Rowdiness begins around 9 PM. $5. 21+.

Coo Coo Bad Brains, Obtuse, William Austin Clay
The Yellow Sub, 10 PM
Join The Yellow Sub for a “very scary” Friday the 13th show. All the way from the Centennial State (that’s Colorado, folks) is Coo Coo Bad Brains who’ll be delivering “bathtub music at best” and Obtuse who’ll showcase their “stay puft punk rock” stylings. Denton’s own William Austin Clay shows us what his non-idiomatic indie sound is all about. The address will be available via the event page on the day of the show, so keep your eyes peeled. Let’s get freaky, y’all. Free!

Saturday, January 14

Bodyjam™ at North Lakes
North Lakes Recreation Center, 10:30 AM
Shape up your Saturday with Bodyjam™ at North Lakes Recreation Center. Combining music, culture, and dance, this fitness class will be unlike anything you’ve experienced. So, shake it up and sweat it out to house, hip hop, drum ‘n’ bass, trap, and electronic dance music. Their mantra seems to be: “Because life’s too short for bad dance classes.” We’ll shimmy to that. FREE.

Eco-Dyeing Workshop
SCRAP, 11 AM
Jessica West of Westward Studios invites you to an Eco-Dyeing Workshop at SCRAP Denton. In this class, you’ll learn how to bundle-dye fabric using eco-friendly techniques and materials. Each student will be given an 11” x 44” cotton strip to craft into a personalized scarf—sewing directions included. Whether you’re a pro or a newbie, all those who are 16+ are welcomed. $20. Bonus: A follow-up class will be offered on January 21 for an additional $10. Get your stitch (and dye) fix, Denton.

Taps & Caps First Anniversary Celebration
Taps & Caps, 12 PM
Taps & Caps is turning one! Help them celebrate this milestone as they work to show their appreciation for Denton’s continued support of this craft beer heaven. Body English will help closeout the night with their unique style of R&B fusion. We’re not sure exactly how else they’ll be celebrating, but we’re excited to find out. Keep an eye on the event page for further details. This spirited jubilee will take place 12 PM to 12 AM.

Comedy Showcase Benefit Show
Private Residence, 8 PM
With the brevity of human life, it is important to chuckle, chortle, and even cackle when we can. Laugh the night away while supporting a good cause with a troop of local comics. For entry, they’re asking you either bring $1–$3, an article of clothing (coat, glove, hat, etc.), or 3–5 canned goods. All donations will go to benefit Denton County Friends of the Family, a nonprofit organization devoted to helping those impacted by relationship violence and sexual assault. Dove Hunter, Sleepyhouse, Fun Button
Andy’s Bar, 9 PM
Saturdays are for reveling in the rambunctiousness of the weekend and delving into the depths of the local live music scene. Do so at Andy’s with Dove Hunter, who’ll be showcasing their rock ‘n’ roll skills. Sleepyhouse and Fun Button will deliver a double-dose of indie rock to the stage. Cocktails and live music? Seems like a staggering Saturday indeed. $5. 21+.

Sunday, January 15

January Geek Girl Brunch – Sherlock Holmes
The Bearded Monk, 12 PM
Put on your deerstalker and grab your magnifying glass and head to The Bearded Monk for a Sherlock Holmes geek-out sesh over a bountiful brunch. El Rudo, a local taco food truck, will catering this event with options for herbivores, omnivores, and carnivores. The Geek Girl squad will be showing Sherlock – Season 4, episode 1 and part of episode 2. (Don’t worry, books and movies will be touched on, too.) Tickets sales closed on Monday—so, my dear Watson, we hope you took advantage.

Kim Nall & The Fringe, Claire Morales, Daniel Markham
Dan’s Silverleaf, 6 PM
Spend your Sunday being serenaded by some of Denton’s finest at Dan’s Silverleaf. Kim Nall & The Fringe will be celebrating the release of their debut album Lay Your Vision Down by sharing their Americana music with a Country-noir twist. The official release of the album is January 20, allowing you to purchase an advance copy at the show. Score! They’ll also be sharing the stage with Denton sweethearts Claire Morales and Daniel Markham. Morales delivers the dreamy melodies, Markham brings the rock. Tickets are $7 and are available in advance via Prekindle. 21+.
