Weekend Update: 4/13–4/16

Dentonites! What plans do you have to make your weekend a little more rowdy and a lot more fun? Need help navigating the many events our community has to offer? We’ve highlighted a few of the happenings taking place in Denton this weekend to help you along your way. Now, get out there and have some fun!

Thursday, April 13

The Dentonite Presents: City Council Candidate Debate

BackYard On Bell, 6 PM

The Dentonite is thrilled to host a City Council Candidate Debate at BackYard On Bell. Moderated by Daniel Abasolo, this event is a great opportunity to get to know what these candidates stand for. If you’d like to learn more about the candidates, check out the event page. Change starts on a local level, so bring your questions! The debate will run 6 PM–8 PM. 

Your Guess Is As Good As Mine

Cora Stafford Gallery, 6 PM

Join UNT’s Advanced New Media Art students for the reception of their spring 2017 group exhibition: Your Guess Is As Good As Mine. Featuring works from eleven students, this exhibition explores color, consumption, and personal and social/political narratives. Your Guess Is As Good As Mine will run April 12–15. Explore Denton and the art within. Thursday’s reception starts at 6 PM.

 

DDFW Master of the Mic: Round 1

Andy’s Bar, 10 PM

Are you a Master of the Mic? If so, join the annual DDFW Master of the Mic competition at Andy’s Bar. A metroplex-wide event, judges and fans choose two artists through a series of eliminations from each city (Denton, Dallas, and Fort Worth) to compete. Registration is $25 on a first-come, first-served basis; artists will be asked to perform two songs for three judges, with 10 artists moving on to Round 2 in July. Not much of a master? It’s only $5 for spectators. Competition kicks off at 10 PM. 21+.

 

Baptist Generals

Midway Craft House, 8 PM

Join Midway Craft House (MCH) on Thursday night for a special show, as they’ll be hosting longtime Denton band Baptist Generals. Playing in alternative spaces is no new feat for these indie-folk rockers, and MCH promises you’ll be kicking yourself if you miss this show. Live music and craft beers? We’d say that’s a surefire way to start the weekend right. Free.


 

Friday, April 14

 

Felt & Fur “Aftertouch” Album Release & Art Show

Mable Peabody’s, 8 PM

Join funeral-pop/doom-disco trio Felt & Fur for their “Aftertouch” album release show at Mable Peabody’s Beauty Parlor and Chainsaw Repair. To celebrate this release, there will be a pop-up art show, video exhibition, DJ sets, vendors, and performances by Curved Light, Pitter Patter, Jake Schrock, Mother Tongues, and, of course, Felt & Fur. Set times are TBA, so keep an eye on the event page. Festivities begin at 8 PM. Free.

 

Colere, Vol. 3

Taps & Caps, 9 PM

Granatum Film Fest—a short film collage and art exhibition—invites you to their event: Colere, Vol. 3. This third installment will showcase two short films: Gray Matter dir. by Nicole Lefteau and Lipstick dir. by Connor Clift, along with a site-specific movement performance directed by Rebecca Lopez and performed by members of the Denton art community. Musical performances by Westin Oxking Portillo and Noah Douglas LeGrand will close out the night. There is a $3 cover charge for those 18–20 and $1 for those 21+. Fine films and craft beers? Spring Fling at the Denton Community Market

Denton Community Market, 9 AM

Join the Denton Community Market (DCM) for their Spring Fling. This fun-filled event will feature a ton of activities, such as an egg hunt for kids, an Eggstravaganza Photo Booth sponsored by Rose Costumes, and a chance to win a Market Sampler Basket full of DCM goodies. Don’t forget to purchase your reusable DCM shopping tote from Nice Dudes Servicing Craft! Shop local on this spring Saturday, y’all. The market opens at 9 AM.

 

Inaugural Decks on Decks Fundraiser

BackYard On Bell, 12 PM

Skate your way into Saturday with the inaugural Decks on Decks Denton Skate Foundation Fundraiser. This family-fun event will deliver a full-day of games, live music, art, food, prizes, and skateboards. Facepainting, tarot readings, and t-shirt printing will also be available. Plus, the Denton Skate Team will be holding official demos. All proceeds will benefit the Denton Skate Park Foundation to aid with their mission of bringing a brand new skate park to the heart of Denton. It’s free for kids and $10 for 18+. Event runs until 12 AM.

 

Retrograde Motion, Wren, Black Market Garden, This Is The End Of You, Sterling

Killer’s Tacos, 6 PM

Delve into the depths of the live local music scene and discover something new at Killer’s Tacos. They’re hosting an eclectic lineup of local musicians, featuring performances by Retrograde Motion, Wren, Black Market Garden, and more. Plus, it’s D. Roc’s birthday! And whether you know him or not, we’re sure he’d be down to celebrate over live music and killer tacos. It’s an early one, y’all. Show starts at 6 PM.

 

Barbara Black, Tusk, Her, Future Self

Dan’s Silverleaf, 10 PM

Before your day of rest, relish the weekend with a little revelry at Dan’s Silverleaf. Rock ‘n’ roll duo Tusk, Her make their way from Austin to showcase their sound alongside Denton rock bands Barbara Black and Future Self. Doors are at 9 PM; things get heavy around 10 PM. Tickets are only 7 bucks. 21+.


 

Sunday, April 16

 

Easter Brunch

Wine Squared, 11 AM

Satisfy your Sunday morning cravings and do brunch with the best at Wine Squared. This Easter Brunch will feature a spread of both sweet and savory waffles, fruits, salad, brie, both meat and veggie quiches, and bacon. It’s $22 for brunch and a single mimosa and $32 for brunch and a mimosa carafe; tickets are available via a link on the event page. Bonus: There will be an Easter egg hunt on the back patio. (We heard chocolate will be involved!) If you bought tickets for the April 2 brunch that was canceled, they’re valid for this one. Feasting begins at 11 AM.

 

Hovvdy, Madeline Crisman, Dead Sullivan, William Austin Clay

The Yellow Sub, 9 PM

Before the week starts anew, say so-long to the weekend with a stellar house show. Austin indie-pop duo Hovvdy make the trek north to showcase their pillowcore/sad-rock sounds at local house venue The Yellow Sub. Joining the bill is Denton’s own Madeline Crisman, Dead Sullivan, and William Austin Clay. The show is free, but donations for the touring band are greatly appreciated.
