Weekend Update: 4/20–4/23

Denton never falls short of having a variety of community events to offer each and every week(end). This week alone Thin Line Fest returns for its tenth year, Twilight Tunes kicks off, Spiderweb Salon hosts a poetry party, Denton Parks and Rec will hold a movie night, and—of course—there will be no shortage of art or music. We’ve highlighted a few of these events with our Weekend Update. So, take a glimpse and let it guide you to another weekend of #Dentoning.

Thursday, April 20

 Luminarium: Architects of Air

UNT, Monday–Friday

Join the University of North Texas’ Fine Arts Series as they present Luminarium: Architects of Air, a world-renowned interactive art exhibit. Described as a dazzling and colorful walk-through sculpture, designers drew inspiration from Gothic cathedrals and traditional Islamic architecture to construct this tribute to the beauty of light and color. Get cultured while you can—this unique exhibit runs until April 21, 1 PM–7 PM daily.

 

Thin Line Fest

Denton, Wednesday–Sunday

It’s that time of year again, y’all. Thin Line Fest—a five-day film, music, and photography festival in Denton—is back! This marks the tenth anniversary of the nonprofit, volunteer-run fest that proudly celebrates the best and most relevant documentaries and photographs in the world as well as the best local and regional music. The Film Fest will take place at Campus Theatre, the Photography Fest at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center, and the Music Fest will take place at multiple venues around town. Event runs through Sunday. See event page for further details. The fest is FREE, but registration is required!

 

Twilight Tunes – The Monkberries

Courthouse Lawn, 6:30 PM

The Denton Main Street Association presents: Twilight Tunes, a free concert series downtown. Every Thursday evening they’ll feature live music from local artists on the Courthouse Lawn. The Monkberries, a six-piece rock band, kick off this event with their feel-good music. Twilight Tunes will take place weekly until the end of June. Thursday, you look good. Tunes start at 6:30 PM.

Familia – Opening Reception

Voertman’s Gallery, 6 PM

Voertman’s Gallery proudly presents Familia: A Collaborative Art Show. Featuring works from artists with various backgrounds, Familia promotes diversity, unity, and friendship. Joey Torrescano, Amelia Morales, and Orlando Thomas are just a few of the talented artists showcasing their artwork. This exhibition runs until May 7th and can be viewed during regular business hours. Friday is the Opening Reception, which begins at 6 PM. Let’s get artsy, Denton.

 

Free Movie in the Park: Finding Dory

Denton Civic Center Lawn, 8 PM

Join the Denton Parks and Rec for a free movie in the park. Bring a blanket and/or chairs and gather under the stars on the Denton Civic Center lawn for the night’s feature of Finding Dory. Arts and crafts along with a marshmallow roast will start at 8 PM. Movie starts around 9 PM or dusk. Concessions will be sold, so bring $$.

The Yellow Sub, 9 PM

Find all the feels on Friday in true Denton fashion—gathered ‘round a house venue stage. The Yellow Sub presents a night of live music, featuring performances by Denton neo-psych rock band Dome Dwellers, garage rock band Mink Coats, and alternative hip hop trio Nakamara. Whit, a solo indie/art-rock artist, makes her way from Houston to join the bill. If you need the address, you can message The Yellow Sub via Facebook. It’s B.Y.O.B., y’all! Free.

Earth Day Celebration

Juice Lab, 9 AM

It’s Earth Day! Juice Lab invites you to celebrate our planet with educational workshops, live music, and other activities. They’ll be schooling us on minimizing waste, recycling, and food-saving kitchen tricks. The workshops have limited space, so sign-up ASAP. After the event, head to UNT for the March for Science, where Juice Lab Founder Loni Puckett will be speaking. Let’s celebrate Mother Earth—she’s the only one we’ve got. (We haven’t colonized Mars, yet. . .) Earthly festivities begin at 9 AM.

 

North Texas Trade Days

North Texas Fair & Rodeo, 10 AM

Calling lovers of all things vintage! Prepare for a two-day shopping extravaganza as the Vintage Variety Market hosts North Texas Trade Days at the North Texas Fair & Rodeo. This upscale, down-home style market will deliver a few days of fabulous food and local entertainment—fun for the whole family—right here in the heart of Denton. Tickets are $5 and are available via www.northtexastradedays.com or at the gate. Festivities begin at 10 AM.  

 

Denton March for Science

UNT Environmental Science Building, 1 PM

Dentonites will gather on Saturday at the UNT Environmental Science Building parking lot to March for Science. Citizens who’d like to show their appreciation for science in all capacities will march from UNT to TWU. Once the march has been completed, local scientists will deliver short speeches on why they got into the field and what makes them appreciate it. The march begins at 1 PM, but they ask you arrive a little early. Free! Let’s put one foot in front of the other and March for Science, Denton.

 

Spiderweb Salon’s Poetry Party

Wine Squared, 7 PM

Join Spiderweb Salon for a Poetry Party hosted at Wine Squared. They’re teaming up with Thin Line Fest and some of DFW’s best poets and writers for a celebratory evening of poetry and performance. Performers for this event have been featured over the last month on Spiderweb Salon’s updated website, so take a peek before you head to the show. Bonus: A brand new Spiderweb Salon zine will be released at the show. The event is FREE, but the wine is not (*sad face*) so bring some dough/cheddar/plastic/cold, hard cash. Party starts at 7 PM.

Proof: Photographs from Four Generations of a Texas Family – Opening Reception

UNT on the Square, 3 PM

In the 1890s, a Gainesville hardware store owner named Byrd Williams decided he wanted to sell postcards that didn’t depict overseas locales. With this in mind, Williams bought a postcard camera and began taking pictures all over Texas. That was the beginning of the Byrd Williams Family Collection, which now includes 10,000 prints and 300,000 negatives that are now part of the University of North Texas Libraries’ Special Collections. A selection of this massive collection will be on display for Proof: Photographs from Four Generations of a Texas Family at UNT on the Square. This exhibition runs through May 13. The opening reception is 3 PM–5 PM on Sunday.
