Weekend Update: 5/25–5/28
The weekend is here! Celebrate by scooping up handmade goods from the art vendors of the Denton Community Market, by scooting over to Dan’s Silverleaf for a little honky-tonk, and by discovering a creative outlet with a batik workshop. Of course, there’s plenty more happening around Denton this weekend. We’ve highlighted a few of the events taking place Thursday–Sunday for you. So, gear up and get out there, Dentonites.
Thursday, May 25
Patterson-Appleton Arts Center, 6 PM
Join the Greater Denton Arts Council and the Denton Community Market for Creative Reuse: Upcycling and Recycling Handmade Goods. Featuring works of art and handmade goods from the arts vendors of the Denton Community Market, this crafty event will also provide a short info session and a panel discussion with the artists on upcycling and recycling. Denton’s talking crafty to us, and that talk is free.
II Charlie’s Bar & Grill, 8 PM
Calling all Simpsons fans! II Charlie’s Bar & Grill is hosting a night of trivia on America’s favorite never-aging family: The Simpsons. Do you know the name of Bart’s evil twin brother? What is Homer and Marge’s song? Has Mr. Burns ever been over 100 years old? Flex your biggest organ and show everyone how S-M-R-T you are. Plus, $4 taco baskets (mmm...taco baskets…) and $2.50 domestic wells and drafts will be available. Winning teams receive cash prizes, so try and shout out a few more woohoos than d’ohs. Trivia starts at 8 PM.

Kids’ Art Month and Silent Auction
West Oak Coffee, 7 PM
Join West Oak Coffee for the closing ceremony of Kids’ Art Month and Silent Auction. Throughout the month of May, the works of local home-schooled art students, each featuring a Texas Nature theme, have been on display at West Oak. Each piece of artwork is available via a silent auction, and bids can be placed until the end of the evening. All proceeds from the silent auction will benefit Cumberland Children’s Home. Come show your support for the creative kids who donated their time and talent to help others! The closing ceremony begins at 7 PM.
Dan’s Silverleaf, 8 PM
The legendary country/Texas country artist Dale Watson will take over the Dan’s Silverleaf stage on Friday, so get ready to scoot your boots. Championing "Ameripolitan" as a new genre of original music, this Austin-based singer and guitarist will showcase his folksy songwriting skills. Fort Worth AmeriTonk singer/songwriter Summer Dean opens. Tickets are $12. Snag them ahead of time via www.prekindle.com. Music starts at 9 PM. Let’s honky-tonk, y’all!
BackYard On Bell, 8 PM
BackYard On Bell (BYOB) invites you to get ready for summer with another installment of their 5 for $5 series. This go-round will feature live performances by Rock ‘n’ Roll Cannibals, Jared & The Jewelers, Impulse Dog, Sink In, and Kamikaze Pilots Manual. That’s a lot of band(s) for your buck! As always, BYOB will be serving up delicious homemade pizza and cocktails. Food truck food will be available, too! This $5 party in the yard starts around 8 PM.
Saturday, May 27
Karma Yoga Denton, 10 AM
Join Karma Yoga Denton for the return of Rise and Shine on the Square, and start your Saturday by stretching the stress away. This will be the kick-off event of this series, which will take place every Saturday on the Courthouse lawn. They may have a few mats to spare, but it’s best to bring your own. (A blanket works, too!) Soak up some rays and center yourself for FREE!
Mother Tongues EP Release & Art Show
Harvest House, 4 PM
Join Denton-based dreamy psych-rock five piece Mother Tongues for their first-ever EP release this Saturday at Harvest House. Helping them celebrate are Texas bands The Rotten Mangos, Palm Daze, and Telemegasounds. Joining the bill is The Bristol Hills. Bonus: There will be live painting with art vendors—curated by Denton Gallery and Weird Destiny. Music starts at 7 PM. FREE!
Fishboy Album Release Show with Birds of Night, Daniel Markham
Dan’s Silverleaf, 8 PM
Join Denton indie-rock/comic-drawing band Fishboy at Dan’s Silverleaf for the release of their latest album, Art Guards. They’ll be performing the album in its entirety with a few one-night-only surprises, and all 200+ Art Guard paintings will be for sale along with the new LP, CD, and comic. Denton rock bands The Birds of Night and Daniel Markham join this rock opera to help celebrate this release. Music starts at 9 PM. $7. 21+.
Mink Coats, STRAYS, Birthday Club, Pearl Crush
Andy’s Bar, 9 PM
Hey, it's Trenton Denton’s 30th birthday! Whether you know the Mink Coats’ drummer or not, come help him celebrate three decades of life at Andy’s Bar. Joining this celebration will be Denton psych-rock trio STRAYS, along with Houston band Birthday Club (psych-pop) and solo artist Pearl Crush (subversive pop). And, of course, Mink Coats will be showcasing their garage-psych skills. It's only $5! Sounds like a party to us. 21+.
Mable Peabody’s Beauty Parlor and Chainsaw Repair, 9 PM
Find all the glitz and glamour on Saturday night at Mable Peabody’s Beauty Parlor and Chainsaw Repair as they host their Hell Hath No Fury event. Ready to wow you and leave you begging for more, this salacious show will feature live performances by Viva L’Vox, Enchanté LeFay, Jackie O’Nasty, and more. Plus, there will be games and a raffle. Like they say, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, so be there or be square. It's only seven bucks. 21+.
Sunday, May 28
A Creative Art STUDIO, 2:30 PM
Are you interested in expanding your watercolor horizons? Join A Creative Art STUDIO for their Watercolor Batik Workshop. Using the age-old batik technique—a method of producing colored designs on textiles by dyeing them—this class will teach you how to properly apply and paint wax once adhered to rice paper. Chris Welch & The Cicada Killers, Kim Nall & The Fringe

Wrap up your weekend with a little awe-inspiring live music and a lot of delectable cocktails (regular ol’ beer works, too) on the back porch of Dan’s Silverleaf. Backed by The Cicada Killers, Chris Welch—a veteran to the North Texas music scene—brings his Texas R&B style soul to the stage. Joining the bill is Kim Nall & The Fringe, Americana/country-noir from the Li'l D. Let’s enjoy the patio weather on the patio! It’s FREE, y’all.
