If you didn’t jam-pack enough fun into your Labor Day weekend, set your sights on these Denton happenings. There are a wealth of events to partake in—everything from art to music to paper-making and more—so, let this list lead the way to another weekend full of exciting escapades.

If these events don't make your cut, feel free to head to our comprehensive calendar of all the Denton events.

Thursday, September 8

One Process, Infinite Solutions
Voertman’s Gallery, 5 PM
Take a peek into the artist’s perspective with One Process, Infinite Solutions. This unique exhibit is a study of how each artist creates their own paths when creating work. With a month to execute, each Denton artist (resident or connected to the community) was given identical instructions on how to create a piece. The idea behind this experiment was to see if the artist’s individual and personal experiences were revealed in the artwork itself. Our angle? This is the last weekend to explore this sui generis-esque exhibit, so delve into some art and discover Denton.

Criminal Birds / The Kickback / Avi Buffalo
Harvest House, 8 PM
Catch Criminal Birds showcase their psych-rock skills at Harvest House. This four-piece “atmospheric, groove-based nucleus” will be joined by the Chicago-based alternative band The Kickback and indie-pop cats (not actually cats, but one can dream) Avi Buffalo from Long Beach. For all intents and purposes, this will be a really rad show. 21+.

Friday, September 9

Sundown’s 5th Annual(ish) Short Works Festival
Green Space Arts Collective, 8 PM
Sundown Collaborative Theatre Presents: We All (Still) Make Mistakes, The B-Sides—A Drunken Mixtape. This marks Sundown’s 5th annual(ish) Short Works Festival, and this year’s works explore how some of our mistakes could potentially inspire personal and artistic breakthroughs. This novel festival runs until October 2nd. Tickets are $12 general admission and $10 for students/Seniors. 12 nights + 14 works + 1 festival = yes, please.

The Birds of Night / Otis the Destroyer / The Heavy Hands
Dan’s Silver Leaf, 9 PM
Revel in the rhythmic riffs of rock ‘n’ roll at Dan’s. Denton’s own rock band The Birds of Night will be taking the stage along with Austin’s “sexy time music” (thank you, Facebook) Otis the Destroyer. The Heavy Hands open. If you haven’t yet seen these three bands live, here’s your chance! Music starts at 9 PM.

Sedated Live at The Abbey Underground with Zativah Kid and Clobbergiest
The Abbey Underground, 9 PM
Twenty, twenty, twenty-four hours to go...until Sedated (potentially the world’s greatest Ramones tribute band) bring their punk-loving selves to Denton for the first time. Joining the bill is Zativah Kid and Clobbergiest. So hurry, hurry, hurry, this show will be insane! The whole shebang begins at 9 PM.

Saturday, September 10

Paper Making Workshop
SCRAP Denton, 4 PM
Spend the day learning how to make your own paper from recycled materials with SCRAP Denton. This creative workshop will show you the ropes of paper-making—all of the techniques and terminology to boot. Experiment with mixing pulp colors and making plantable paper. Children 8+ are welcome when accompanied by an adult. Get crafty, Denton.

Fire Relief Show
E. Third, 5 PM
This show will also benefit Denton bands and recent house-fire victims Mink Coats and She Banshee. The two bands will be playing this show as well as Mother Tongues and Honest Cops. A comedy showcase will also be in place. If you have cash to spend or gear to give, they’re graciously accepting. And if you can’t make the show, check out the event page for their GoFundMe link. Help the bands recoup what they lost and keep them playing!

Dome Dwellers / Caustic Casanova / Orcanaut / Fun Button
Purple Palace, 8:30 PM
Recently, Denton bands Mink Coats and She Banshee were victims of a house fire. To help, local heavy/neo-psych/math rockers will be supplying some tunes—promising to be all the Dad-rock you could ever want—and holding a $3 raffle for a chance to win a prize pack and other band goodies. All proceeds will go to help the house-fire victims. A $5 donation for entry is requested to assist the touring band, Caustic Casanova (D.C.). Come party at the Purple House for a good cause!

The Jagoe House Returns
Jagoe House, 9 PM
It’s house show season, y’all! Join the Jagoe House as they return for a night of music. With first-time performances by Samsara and Day 4, and returning performances by Eric Daino and The Heavy Hands—who will be releasing their latest album—this night will be brimming with post-modern, jazz, and a lot of rock ‘n’ roll. A limited number of “I <3 Jagoe” stickers will be available to those who buy merch or donate to the bands. Party starts at 9 PM.

Sunday, September 11

Second Sunday Yoga Drum Jam
Audacity Brew House, 11 AM
It’s that time again! Karma Yoga will be hosting their monthly Second Sunday Yoga Drum Jam at Audacity. Local drummers will provide beats for yogis to flow and grow (stretching, of course) to. This all-levels class is $5, and all proceeds will benefit 7Feathers. They’ll even have extra mats to borrow and cold towels to keep you cool. Once you’re done, slide up to the counter for a local brew.

Heard’s End of Summer Meet & Greet!
Address TBA, 1 PM
HEARD (honest, educational, accessible, representative, d.i.y.) is a small cooperative of women/non-binary arts and music activists working to give you a voice in the community. This newly-founded group is inviting all femme/non-binary/queer people in Denton to meet the founders, meet each other, and grab some grub. This potluck picnic is BYOP (bring your own plate), and if you’re not sure what food to bring, napkins or blankets work, too! The address will be announced the day of, so keep an eye on the event page.
