Music We Love: Claire Morales & Gollay's cover of 'Suzanne'
Claire Morales is Denton’s most collaboratively nomadic female songwriter. She is constantly working with different folks in addition to doing her own solo work, and her latest project is a refreshing take on a song from the 1960’s. Morales teamed up with Fort Worth’s Gollay for their cover of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Suzanne.’
The duo recorded ‘Suzanne’ at Civil Recording, Michael Briggs’ recording studio that was previously positioned at one of Denton’s most legendary DIY venues, Macaroni Island. Gollay & Morales put a feminine twist on a song that is ultimately about a woman Cohen admired and regularly observed.
The song was originally a poem in Cohen’s 1966 book, Parasites of Heaven. Nobley, in a video that was released in the 70’s he said “it’d be wrong to write this song and get rich from it, too.” The original song can be heard here, via a special recording from the 70's.
