Rhythm is a Dancer: Denton Dance Parties

Dance parties: you love them or you hate them. They leave you feeling wildly uncomfortable or they render you wild and free. Whichever way your dance card falls, feelings surrounding the topic run strong and deep, and for the past decade (the only Denton decade I can vouch for) dancing has always been a “thing.” If you were into it, you were into it. Whether it was 80's night at Hailey's, Discipline at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios, or just a funky playlist over a box of wine in your best friend's garage, Dentonite's have been dancing for as long as anyone can remember. Over the years the dance floors, DJ's, and crowds may have changed, but the music is constant. You can guarantee that there is plenty of dance music - and really music of any kind - left to be heard and moved to, so heads up Denton dancers - this weekend is for you.

DJ DREAMLOVER69 and Slush (Rob Buttrum and Andrew Michael, respectively) have been involved in the local music and art scene for over the past decade and the two are Denton dance staples. After DJing shows and private parties, this DJ duo returns to Rubber Gloves this Thursday, February 11, with their second installment of PDA: An Underground Dance Party. DJ DREAMLOVER69 and Slush know how to give a dance floor what it wants and they are able to keep it lit for hours without putting a dent in their music collections. Expect 80's, industrial, acid, italo, and the hottest dance party of your hottest dreams. As always this event is free for everyone 21 and up, and $3 for minors. The party starts as soon as doors open at 9 p.m. You'll fit right in if you come early, stay late, let go.

This Friday, February 12's dance party will be going down at the disco in Fort Worth (yes, we known Fort Worth is not in Denton), also known as 1912 Club. If you have not ventured south for a night among the checkerboard dance floor, mirror wrapped stage, and lights, then it is high time to make the short trek down and experience what it is that is drawing so many of us Dentonites to play and attend these shows in our southwest neighbor. AFTV, Austin Fox and Tiago Varjao, will be coming to 1912 to play their synthesized siren songs. True aliens, AFTV, are also major players in the DFW dance scene and have been producers of electronic music for many years. Denton's very own Psychic Killers, Slackbeat, and Ruffle will be opening the show, and when the mind melting is over at 1912, the dance party will continue across the street at 1919 Hemphill. AFTV at 1912 is $5. Doors are at 9pm and the music kicks off at 10pm.

The dance party returns to Denton on Saturday, February 13, 2016. This date is officially V-alien-tine's Day, and DFW's very own darklord, Cygnus, will be coming to town to play a house show with Denton based DJ Cymatic, Spice Boys, and Drunk in Public. This will be the first Cygnus show in Denton since his return from tour with legendary electro duo, Autechre, and it is safe to say that we have been patiently waiting. Cygnus has also spent time playing with electro space stars such as Del the Funky Homosapien, Dopplereffekt, Egyptian Lover, Ultradyne, and he has released over ten albums. DJ Cymatic and Spice Boys are well versed in dance culture and regularly play electro, techno, and acid in Dallas. Local house venue, Pink Cactus, will be hosting the out of this world dance party.
