Mixtape Monday: February 27, 2017
The shortest month of the year is almost over, and we can't wait to see what the rest of 2017 has in store for us— especially musically. Over here at The Dentonite, it seems like we keep hearing of exciting releases to expect later in the year. It's worth noting that two months in, we've already heard so many great tunes from bands both established and brand new. With that, here are four favorites of ours to get you through the week.
Wish I Was a Kid Again - The Train Side Graffiti
Eric McGarrh’s solo project The Train Side Graffiti released two tracks this past week. This song is a longing for the easy times, and the times when no one could disappoint or be disappointed. You can hear the hypocrisy and its hateful repercussions in life in McGarrh’s somber-yet-pleading voice and strong strumming. The parallelism in McGarrh’s lyrical composition is informed and listeners will easily empathize.
too much coffee not nearly enough donuts - Rosie
Axel Severs’s musical meditative compulsion is created with—and named on Soundcloud for—his dog Rosie in mind, as he finds it more meaningful to approach his creative output through his devotion for his pup. This track is reminiscent of Scottish band Mogwai, featuring a melodic bass line throughout most of the track with heavy, introspective distortions.
Big Nose Kate Fisher - Ten Hands
The latest release from metroplex legends Ten Hands will remind you why they were the band to see in Denton and Dallas in the late ‘80s/early ‘90s—and still deserve all of your listening now. This funky classic rock tune is fun, with full, poppy guitars, keys, and percussion, and J. Paul Slavens’s gravelly voice giving a perfect Ten Hands accompaniment to the track’s inane-yet-endearing lyrics.
Bad - Dquan Cage and Trey Detroit
Local hip-hop artist Trey Detroit teamed up with Los Angeles-based Dquan Cage for this ridiculously catchy track produced by Based Vision. Singing about a physical and deep love, Dquan and Trey repeat “I don’t want to lose your love” with some of the smoothest voices around.
