Fry Street Shooting Claims the Life of Former Football Player
Fry Street was eerily quiet on a Tuesday evening following the shooting that took the life of Deandre Wilson at The Library Bar located on Avenue A. According to a report provided by The Denton Record Chronicle, Wilson was shot following an argument between two groups of men which resulted in one suspect fleeing the scene. Wilson was declared dead on arrival by the Denton Fire and Rescue. At 4:40 PM, the DRC later reported that Hanyel Leon Gomez had been arrested in connection to the crime.
The Library Bar was closed for business in wake of the tragedy. The Garage declined to comment on the incident. However, a passerby who agreed to give an interview with The Dentonite had a link to Deandre Wilson.
Alabama A&M Graphic Design major Solomon Hunter explained that he had heard about the tragedy via Facebook as well as by word of mouth through mutual friends. He recognized Wilson’s name from a previous college and had him as a friend on Facebook.
“I played football at Cisco College. That’s my connection to him. “He went to that community college in 2010 playing football,” Hunter explained.
The DRC added in their report that Wilson graduated from Denton Guyer High School, playing for the football team in 2008-2009. While Hunter never met Wilson face to face he expressed his sadness regarding the tragedy.
“From what I know he was a good guy. He was part of the Cisco family,” he added. I wish it didn’t happen, but it did. I try to learn from it and be more cautious.”
Solomon also expressed shock over the violence of the situation.
“My personal experience here I thought it was a good area. But now it makes me want to be more cautious about everything,” he concluded.
The Dentonite will continue to follow up on the tragedy as more information is brought forward to the public.
