Independent Film in Denton is Thriving: Pre-Granatum Short Film Showcase Preview

Pre-Granatum Short Film Showcase
February 25th, 2016, Andy's Bar
9PM, $5, 21+ only

As Film Festival season in Denton is wrapping up, Granatum is ramping up their yearly production schedule beginning with the event tonight at Andy’s Bar. Pre-Granatum Short Film Showcase will be re-showing six short films from their 2015 selections alongside four new films. In addition to that, they’ll be introducing new singer/songwriter Jared Caraway this evening.

Granatum is a series of showcases that feature local filmmakers, artists, and musicians. The events and productions are coordinated by way of local filmmakers Mateo Granados, Jeremy Taub, and Joe Barnett. The idea originally began with Granados who intended on it being just one showcase, last summer. “It turned into a series due to a strong response, and a wealth of awesome indie films that I came across,” he shares.

Their last event was this past November, where they shared three films from the UNT Short Film Club. Granatum (proper) will be held over the course of three main showcases this summer. Each show is typically accompanied by a singer/songwriter and art curation of some sort. Past showcases have included new media showcases, photography, and dance performances.

Last years curators included Fey Sandoval for photography, Jessie Moncrief and Olivia Brown curated mixed art, and Alex Cole choreographed the modern dance performance.

“We have also partnered with 1124, a handcrafted clothing line founded by TWU grad, Katie Mont,” Granados shares. “She'll be showing her newest t-shirt designs at our show.”

Granatum events have taken place at local brew houses, coffee shops, and now Andy’s Bar. In Denton, anything is possible.

We support our local bands and the music scene by going to shows. We support our local restaurants and businesses by eating and shopping locally. Denton offers more than that. Our culture is rich with talent; we have artists of all kinds bursting at the seams. I think that Granatum deserves the support that we invest into the rest of the arts in Denton.
