As Alex Browne says, "one of the great things about living in Texas is that you can make conversation with literally anyone during the summer simply by bitching about how hot it is." I don't even say hi to people anymore.; I greet everyone with a comment about the ridiculous heat. Anyway, exhibition updates continue to be slow during the summer, but there are two new galleries debuting this weekend at the PAAC. There are also two open calls for submissions that give artists a chance to be featured by GDAC or Brickhaus Art Collective.

Art Glass Ensembles
513 Bolivar St.
If you like art oversized and nifty stained glass, then head over to Art Glass Ensembles on Bolivar Street where their gallery spaces features two pieces created in 1990 by local artist Terry Sewell. Sewell is known for being the president and owner of Denton Glass Company.

The Bearded Monk
122 E. McKinney St.
Bearded Monk may be a beer store but they have no wall that otherwise lack visual pop. Their boastful list of featured artists includes Richard Bradley, Sierra Landeruth, Matthew Sallack, Garret Dennington, Sanford Black, Roy Warren Lunt, Nellie Montgomery, and Eric Mancini. Some of these amazing pieces sell for as low as $20!

Brickhaus Art Collective
215 S. Woodrow Ln
OPEN CALL FOR ENTRIES: Whether it's 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional, if you have art then you can submit it to the Sonar Scan show juried by Christopher Blay who is an artist, writer, and curator with a B.F.A. from TCU. The deadline for entries is August 28th, so time is short!

Patterson-Appleton Arts Center
400 E. Hickory St.
The Visual Arts Society of Texas is sponsoring their 27th annual exhibition which features their own members. Associate Professor in Visual Arts of TWU Colby Parsons juried this show which provides Denton a chance to look at some of the finest artists in the region. Opening reception is at 5:30 pm on August 12th with the award ceremony taking place at 6:30 pm. The run of engagement continues from August 13th - September 3rd, 2016 in the Meadows Gallery and is free to the public.

If cowboy photography piques your interest, you'll want to check out the historic photos from the Charles Cook Collection. The gallery includes photos from the ultimate cowboy/artist, Erwin E. Smith. Weldon's Saddle Shop and Bell & Oak will be adding to the aesthetic with vintage saddles and leatherwork. The opening reception for this is also at 5:30 pm on August 12th. The gallery will continue through September 24th. 

CALL FOR ENTRIES: If you're particularly skilled with the crafts or mixed media, then you may be interested in submitting to the 30th annual Materials: Hard + Soft International Contemporary Craft Competition and Exhibition. The 2017 exhibition will be juried by Joann Edwards, executive director of the Museum of Craft and Design.

This trivia and margarita hotspot has amazing pyrography by Jeremy Sale depicting an epic home run swing from arguably the greatest Texas Ranger ever. MSC also features huge pieces of work made by James Rosin as well as Light and Orbock Art.

Scrap Denton Re:Vision Gallery
420 S. Bell Ave.
Being conscientious about recycling and reusing items is key. SCRAP Denton is currently showcasing soft sculptures created by UNT CVAD students in which the works are made from at least 75% reused, repurposed, and upcycled materials. The work will remain in their gallery for the remainder of the month. If you see something you’d like to buy, you can do that too.

tAd Gallery
901 Ave. C, Ste 101
tAd is a non-for-profit artist run space that is open Monday - Saturday, 11 am - 9 pm, located inside the Bowllery. Current exhibitions includes Traces of the Others as part of their Outskirts: Bodies, Places, & Identities series, a project that explores politics and women's issues as told by artists from diverse backgrounds.

West Oak Coffee Bar
114 W Oak St, Denton, TX 76201
The West Oak folks feature an artist of the month in their corridor at the back of their shop. Rather than feature a strictly visual artist, the current flavor is a musician Erik Beruvides. The album covers designed by Kathleen Clark evoke a sense of cultural pride that reveals how proud the artist is of his family’s history. Across three albums his songs are structured to present a narrative representing Erik’s grandparent's journey as immigrants from Cuba.
