Weekend Update: 12/8 - 12/11

Well, Dentonites, winter has finally decided to say hello, but don’t let that slow down your weekend. There are plenty of indoor events to scout out, or if you’re not ready to forget the great outdoors just yet, you can cozy up with friends and loved ones under one of the many outdoor heaters at your favorite bar/venue. Check out a few things Denton has in store for you with our little curated list.

Thursday, December 8

Siamese, Mother Tongues, Helen Kelter Skelter
Harvest House, 8 PM
Forget Friday and start your weekend early by engaging yourself in the sonic stylings of three must-see/got-to-see bands. Oklahoma natives Helen Kelter Skelter bring their “devilishly fun” psych-rock to the Harvest House stage, joined by Denton’s own dreamy psych band Mother Tongues. Siamese makes their way from Dallas to enthrall us with their theatrically inclined glam-rock. Get out there, Denton. FREE! 21+.

Lochness Mobsters, Sunbuzzed, Acid Carousel
Midway Craft House, 8 PM
Warm up your Thursday night with a little music and a lot of beer (or vice versa, depending on your approach) at Midway Craft House. Acid Carousel starts the night off by harkening back to the sounds of the 60s, and Austin-based The Lochness Mobsters are set to follow with their lo-fi surf rock melodies. Denton’s own spooky psych-rock band Sunbuzzed headlines. FREE, but donations for the touring band are greatly appreciated. Music starts at 9 PM.

Friday, December 9

Stuff the Bag Benefit Show for DCFOF
BackYard on Bell, 8 PM
Join BackYard on Bell for Stuff the Bag, a benefit show for Denton County Friends of the Family (DCFOF). Enjoy an eclectic lineup of local artists along with a bounty of amazing food trucks, and/or pizza, in an effort to bring awareness to this grassroots organization. They’re asking you bring a $4 donation or a new/used purse that will be filled with toiletries and distributed to those in need by DCFOF. There will be plenty of outdoor heaters to keep you warm! ‘Tis the season, y’all.

Shaolin Death Squad, Hen and the Cocks, Mean Motor Scooter and I Am Man, I Am Monster
The Abbey Underground, 9 PM
Finish off your Friday and work out all of the weekly feels with a night of rock and metal at The Abbey Underground. Join Shaolin Death Squad as they celebrate the last month of 2016 along with I Am Man, I Am Monster, Mean Motor Scooter, and Hen and the Cocks—this will be a CD release show for them. FREE.

GLAD’s Fall 2016 Drag Show
Mable Peabody’s, 9 PM
Sashay your way to Mable Peabody’s for the GLAD at UNT, a student organization that serves as the voice of the LGBT+ community on campus, end-of-the-year drag show. Kings, Queens, and everything in between will be strutting their stuff on the Beauty Parlor and Chainsaw Repair stage. Admission is $5 for 21+ and $6 for those 18–20 years of age.

The Bret Crow Show featuring Ethan Bouchard
Killer’s Tacos, 7 PM
If you haven’t caught Bret Crow’s act around town yet (or even if you have), you’re in for a treat. Bret’s act is a satisfying blend of comedy and music that’ll have you chuckling in no time. With Ethan Bouchard along for the ride, the event promises an evening that will be spent “creating songs, jamming, storytelling, and having a grand ‘ol time.”

Tony Ferraro, American Werewolf Academy and Plain Talk
Harvest House, 9 PM
Head on over to Harvest House, grab a drink and settle in for some seriously exciting pop rock. Tony Ferraro, undoubtedly one of Denton’s hardest working musicians, as always promises a great time. If you haven’t heard of American Werewolf Academy or Plain Talk, a quick stroll through their respective online offerings will get you pretty pumped for Friday night. The show is FREE and 21+.

Saturday, December 10

Ugly Holiday Sweater Decorating Workshop
SCRAP, 6:30 PM
It’s that time of year again where seemingly every holiday party has an ugly Christmas sweater theme. Be prepared with this Ugly Holiday Sweater Decorating Workshop hosted by SCRAP Denton—supplies provided, just bring a sweater. They invite you to bring your own snacks and B.Y.O.B. (IDs will be checked). Round up a few friends, and find out how to take tacky to a whole new level. $10 per person. 18+.

II Charlie’s 9th Birthday Party
II Charlie’s Bar & Grill, 7 PM
II Charlie’s Bar & Grill is celebrating N I N E years of quenching the thirst of Dentonites. Help them celebrate Saturday with cheap drinks—$3 Crown/domestic beers—free food (really, say no more), and live music by Bone Doggie & the Hickory Street Band and Azuline. Put your party pants on—festivities begin at 7 PM.

Sunrise Pilots, In Spite of Madness, i, The Ghost
Dane Manor, 8 PM
Another birthday to celebrate! Chris Knox, the “awkward lead singer” of Sunrise Pilots is celebrating his birthday with a rad local showcase at Dane Manor—and you’re invited. i, The Ghost will kick off the night with a few indie/alt-rock tunes and In Spite of Madness is set to bring a lot of alternative rock to this house show venue. Sunrise Pilots is set to trump the night with their loud “awkward core”. We’d say this bill makes for one helluva birthday bash. Party starts around 8 PM.

Santa Rampage
Denton Downtown Square, 7pm
Put on your Santa gear Denton and get ready to crawl your way around downtown. Potluck Pre-Gaming with your fellow St. Nicks will begin at 7pm on the lawn across from J&J's pizza, where Burners without Borders will be collected dry goods/canned food for the Denton Community Food Center. At 8pm the debauchery begins with the crawl route to be posted on Saturday. 

 

Sunday, December 11

A Very Merry Mulberry Market
Mulberry Street Cantina, 2 PM
Did you miss the last day of the Denton Community Market? Fret not, as the Mulberry Market returns! Stop by and shop from select local DCM vendors while sipping on a handcrafted cocktail or two. Mulberry Street Cantina will donate 10% of sales accrued during this very merry event to our community market. Runs from 2–5 PM. Shopping + sipping = a stellar Sunday Funday indeed.  

7Feathers Yoga & Drum Jam
D-Bat, 11 AM
Sure, you’ve done yoga on the courthouse lawn, you’ve done yoga at the bar but have you done yoga inside a batting cage facility? Didn’t think so. 7Feathers gives you the opportunity to both add and promptly cross that particular item off your life list and throws in a drum jam for good measure. The class is all levels and only costs $5. They’ll have extra mats if you’re a yoga newbie or you just forget to bring it along.
