Thursday, March 23

PULP: Works from Advanced Printmaking Studio
Cora Stafford Gallery, 5 PM

The University of North Texas is hosting a four-day exhibition at the Cora Stafford Gallery. PULP: Works from Advanced Printmaking Studio will showcase recent works from undergraduate printmaking students. These students will be representing their art through intaglio, lithography, relief, screen prints, monoprints, mixed media, and more. This exhibition runs Wednesday–Saturday, but make sure to catch the reception on Thursday at 5 PM.

 

Bingo Night
Mulberry Street Cantina, 7 PM

The Denton Community Market will be hosting another Bingo Night at Mulberry Street Cantina. There will be single cards or multi-card packs available—all Bingo card proceeds will go to the Denton Community Market. Daubers will also be available for sale, or you can bring your own. Play one round or every round; either way, you’ll have a chance to score some super sweet prizes from local businesses. Bring cash and your good luck charms!

 

Friday, March 24

Denton Folk Festival
Jagoe House, Friday–Sunday, 7 PM

The first-ever Denton Folk Festival takes place Friday and Saturday at the Jagoe House. Sponsored by the Denton’s Songwriter’s Guild, this fest will showcase some of the metroplex’s finest folkies. Claire Morales, Brent Best, Boxcar Bandits, and Levi Cobb & The Big Smoke are just a few of the talented artists that will be performing. You can see the full schedule via the event page. Free, but donations for the bands are appreciated.

 

Movie Night on the Square: The Princess Bride
Courthouse Lawn, 8 PM

The weather is warmer, so you know what that means—movies on the Courthouse Lawn! Valley Creek Young Adults will be hosting this movie night, showing The Princess Bride. Everyone is welcome to this free event. Oh, and there will be popcorn. (We’re not sure if the popcorn is free, but let’s hope the odds are in our favor.) Family-friendly, friend-friendly. Let’s have fun stormin’ the Courthouse Lawn, y’all.

 

Stand Up at The Monk
The Bearded Monk, 8:30 PM

Laugh away the week’s woes by joining The Bearded Monk for their monthly comedy show. This showcase will feature stand up performances by Just Will, Mark Nash, Dalton Pruitt, Colton Jones, and Zach Arredondo. Let these locals make you laugh while you enjoy a brew or two and $2 16oz. Montucky Cold Snacks. Free.

 

Leoncarlo, Mountain Song (record release), Tinnarose
Harvest House, 9 PM

Head to Harvest House for a night of live music. Experimental composer Leoncarlo creates a unique sound by composing and looping symphonic soundscapes in real time. (If you haven’t seen Leoncarlo before, treat yo’self!) Mountain Song, an exploratory project produced of five Dentonites, deliver celestial sounds through their Cathedral-style music. This will be an album release show for them. Austin-based psych-folk band Tinnarose starts the night off. It’s only $2! 21+.

 

Saturday, March 25

 

Art Swap
The Bearded Monk, 6 PM

As of late, the arts have been targeted. Stand tall, make art, and join The Bearded Monk for a bridge-building event where you can share and swap what you’ve created. Large or small, bring what you’d like to swap for someone else’s work. (Swapping artwork for beer was mentioned on the event page—just sayin’.) Live performances are set to take place but are still TBD, so keep an eye out for that update. This artist mixer starts at 6 PM.

 

Fight Back Fest: ACLU Fundraiser
BackYard On Bell, 8 PM

Standing in solidarity and in support of the families affected by the current state of political affairs, a few fine Dentonites along with the folks at BackYard On Bell are hosting Fight Back Fest, an American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) fundraiser. There will be a stand-up comedy set, live music, and vendors. This all-ages event is free, so stop by and show your support. All proceeds raised will be donated to the ACLU. Rock N Roll Cannibals, Red Money (France), Curse of Cassandra, Speaking in Tongues
Andy’s Bar, 8 PM

Make your Saturday a little unsanctimonious and join Andy’s Bar for a night of live music (and perhaps some booze-inspired fun). Denton’s own Rock N Roll Cannibals bring their Hillbilly rock ‘n’ roll with a horror-punk twist to the stage. Joining the bill is French garage rock band Red Money (currently scouting the states on a U.S. tour) and Ohio dark, electro-dance duo Curse of Cassandra. Speaking in Tongues starts off the night, making their Andy’s Bar debut. Doors open at 9 PM. Free. 21+.

 

Warren Heuristic, Modern Modem, Lex Lata, Springtime & the Changes
The Rabbit Hole, 9 PM

The Rabbit Hole has announced they’ll be winding down and will no longer host shows. They’re hosting three more and ask that you come see some of your favorite locals before they shut their doors. This third-to-last show will feature performances by Warren Heuristic, Modern Modern, Lex Lata, and Springtime and The Changes. Square Waves: An Improvisational Music Ensemble Film Project
Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum, 3 PM

This previously rained-out event is back on! Square Waves invites you to their free event: An Improvisational Music Ensemble Project, a free and public musical film project. Have a beautiful singing voice? Have a camera? Have an acoustic or battery-powered instrument? Come sing, shoot, or strum! All participating filmmakers can submit their footage for the final cut, and all persons will be credited and tagged. Check the event page for the songs that are to be sang. Show off your creative side, Dentonites.  

 

Completely Unhinged Improvised Music Show
Hangout Bar, 9 PM

Join Denton’s “most unhinged venue” for a Completely Unhinged Improvised Music Show. This experimental show will feature performances by Sam Friedland, Joshua Westerman, and Beth Dodds, along with the music of Erik Zahn. Get experimental and unhinge yourself for $5.
