What adventures have you mapped out for your weekend? If you’ve been in Denton for any amount of time, you know there's never a lack of creative events to partake in. We’ve highlighted a few for you! There are a lot of shows taking place, as well as a paint party and a meat-and-greet (yes, you read that right). So, scope out our Weekend Update to see what our thriving community has to offer Thursday through Sunday.

Thursday, June 15

Twilight Tunes – Cliff Temple  – Courthouse Lawn, 6:30 p.m.  

It’s Thursday, so you know what that means: Twilight Tunes on the Courthouse-on-the-Square lawn. Join the Denton Main Street Association as they host another night of live music. This go-round, local singer-songwriter Cliff Temple will be showcasing his rural-roots rock. So, grab a blanket or a lawn chair and head to the square for a little bit of country and a little bit of rock ‘n’ roll. FREE!

Let’s Rock – BackYard On Bell, 8 p.m.

Head to BackYard On Bell for a night of musical magic from artists around the Metroplex and beyond. Denton’s own six-piece ska band Johnny’s Big Red Rocket will deliver their high-energy sound to the stage. Joining the bill is Austin three-piece punk band Pan Complex and four-piece teenage-blues punk rock band Dead Words from Fort Worth. Dallas folk-rock trio Solpier kicks off the night. All ages are welcome. Only $3 for a five-band showcase? Let’s do this, Denton.

Boxcar Bandits – Dan’s Silverleaf, 9 p.m.

The boys in Boxcar Bandits have been sharing their signature skunkgrass sound since 2006. This power-trio, usually featured as a six-piece, will showcase their bluegrass ballads once again on the Dan’s Silverleaf stage. Bonus: Dan’s is still celebrating their 15th anniversary, so put your party pants on and let’s celebrate with live music. Tickets are $7 in advance via www.danssilverleaf.com and $10 at the door. 21+.

 

Friday, June 16

Shiplap Paint Party – Whimsy Finds, 7 p.m.

If you’re a fan of home renovation, you know shiplap is where it’s at. Join Whimsy Finds, a one-of-a-kind shop of unique and handcrafted items off the Square, for their Shiplap Paint Party. Each participant will paint a shiplap sign with their choice of word, font element, and color combo. Tickets are $35 (available via www.whimsyfinds.com), which covers all necessary supplies. Bonus: They’ll be serving up their very own Whimsy Wine-a-Ritas, which are also included in the ticket price. Crafts and cocktails? Friday, you’re all right.

Ghost Memories Album Release – Andy’s Bar, 9 p.m.

Real Rad Records invites you to Andy's Bar to celebrate the release of The Night Left Us Behind, the debut album from Ryan Torres's electronic-pop project Ghost Memories. This evening of audio/visual stimulation also features performances by Lofty Beats, Dreamtime, and TLIT. The time is listed as 9 a.m., but we think it’s safe to say it starts around 9 p.m. It’s only $5, y’all. Let’s dance!

 

Saturday, June 17

Deep Trouble – BackYard On Bell, 2 p.m.

Find yourself in (and at) Deep Trouble this Saturday at BackYard On Bell. Hosted by Gitmo Music, this biggest party of the summer (well, it’s almost summer, right?) will deliver a full day of live music, comedy, face painting, tie-dyeing, food, and more! Plus, there will be a bounce house AND a dunking booth. You can expect to see performances by The Southpaw Preachers, Fab Deuce, Loyal Sally, and The Faps—just to name a few. This all-ages event is $5 for adults (18+) and free for those 17 and under. Let’s get into a little trouble, shall we?

BBQ Meat and Greet – Juicy Pig Barbecue, 5 p.m.

Do you love the Denton arts and music scene? Do you love barbecue? Join the Denton Music and Arts Collaboration (DMAC)—a nonprofit aiming to preserve and promote the musical and artistic heritage of Denton—for a BBQ Meat and Greet. DMAC invites you to come say hello and find out what they’re all about while enjoying delicious barbecue from Juicy Pig. Nice Up Crew will be out spinning records to engage your ears and fancy your feet. Come hungry!

Chiptunes 4 Autism Benefit Show – The Bearded Monk, 7 p.m.

Join The Bearded Monk as they host a benefit show supporting Chiptunes 4 Autism. If you’re not in the know, chiptune is synthesized electronic music made from sound chips in vintage computers, consoles, and arcade machines (anyone remember those?). This night of live music is free, though they’ll be accepting donations to benefit autism-positive charities. Here are the chiptune artists you can catch at the show: DJ Marty Gruver, DJ Roborob, Space Donut, Josh Krow, Friends Ferdinand, and Asperkraken. Delicious beer and nerdcore for a good cause? Yes, please.

Ed Soph Trio, John Sturino Vibes Group – Taps & Caps, 8:30 p.m.

Settle into your Saturday with a little jazz in the shop at Lone Star Taps & Caps. Join the John Sturino Vibes Group and the Ed Soph Trio as they get you jiving with their jazzy sound. Oh, and don’t forget to grab a few craft brews served up by the knowledgeable Taps & Caps staff. There’s a $3 cover for those 18–20 and a $1 cover for those 21+.

 

Sunday, June 18

New Science Projects, Echo Spring, Better Now, Farseek – Killer’s Tacos, 6 p.m.

Say farewell to the weekend with punk, punk, and more punk. Delivering the rowdiness and revelry to this Killer’s Tacos show are Denton bands New Science Projects and Echo Spring, along with Fort Worth’s Better Now and Columbus, Ohio’s Farseek. This show is free, but donations for the touring band are appreciated. So, let’s end the weekend with one killer show and a few killer tacos.

RHU EP Release with Megan Storie – Taps & Caps, 7 p.m.

Extend your Sunday Funday and join Lone Star Taps & Caps for RHU’s EP Release Show. RHU is a Denton-based composer and multi-instrumentalist who’ll be showcasing her indie-rock/smart-pop sound. According to Taps & Caps via the event page, they can’t get enough of her cover of Radiohead’s Idioteque. Come hear for yourself! Joining the bill is singer-songwriter and dreamy vocalist Megan Storie, featuring a full band with a few rad and talented dudes. There is a $3 cover for those 18–20 and a $1 cover for those 21+.
