Five of Denton's Best Music Venues in 2016
A city of scene-stealers must have only the best places to take in the arts. Just as like those who pass through their doors and play on their stages, these venues have made their mark on the heart of Denton culture. These five nominees for Best Music Venue are the stages on which we can best see what our city has to offer. Vote for your favorites here.
Open since 2002, this bar has brought renowned rock, country, and jazz artists from all over the country to Denton for nearly 15 years. (Renowned Dentonite and musician Sarah Jaffe used to work here, and frequently graces the space’s stage.) This is one venue that — though it certainly retains a crowd of regulars — draws a crowd that's diverse in age and musical interests. With a focus on Americana, country, and folk, this is a great venue for taking in a show that, while crowded, remains intimate.
Denton’s newest craft beer and concert area combines sustainable living culture with a tight-knit community celebrating local arts and music. Their programming brings local and regional acts to an outdoor stage for free (or nominal) cover charges. Sound and light engineers bring an updated level of artistry to every performance. With expansive indoor and outdoor areas, a creative drink menu, and fire pits, this venue encourages a particularly social, engaging experience.
This authentic English tavern hosts programming every night after 10 PM, from karaoke to dance nights. Live bands grace the downstairs stage every Thursday and Friday, bringing out the best in big band, funk, and more. Open mic and open jam nights bring out just as much talent as booked shows, so you’re sure to take in great music any and every night.
This haunt on the square has brought great live entertainment to its carpeted stage for more than 20 years. Having undergone a recent renovation, Andy's will continue to bring you shows both intimate and engaging. This venue’s close quarters are ideal for metal and hard rock shows heavy with interaction between musicians and audience. The basement bar, although closed for the time being, is ideal for socializing after a show (and their four-hour happy hour is an added bonus).
Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios
In news that shocked musicians and fans beyond city limits, Rubber Gloves announced that it was closing its doors for good on June 5th of last year. It was here that Denton’s DIY scene could really flourish, especially so close to the hub of the city. The club also hosted national acts, poetry readings, variety shows, and more. The space is still available for rental as rehearsal studios, and continues to foster the spirit of ever-growing musicianship that it has always made welcome.
