Weekend Update: May 12 - 15

FRIDAY THE 13TH IS UPON US. What will you be doing for this wickedly disastrous night? Maybe you’ll hit the anticipated Shinyribs show at Dan’s or deour too many tacos at Harvest House (RIP Flatlanders). No matter what you do, make sure you catch the Community Market on Saturday morning—it’s in full swing and packed with goodies. Pick up some sweet produce, a few soaps and nice smelly things and maybe even some treats for your pup.

Thursday, May 12

Salata Denton Grand Opening Celebration
Salata, 11 am
If you haven’t hit the Fry Street complex in a while, you definitely need to check it out. There are all sorts of great eateries popping up. Today, one of the best salad bars out there opens—Denton will never be the same again. Even better? A portion of the proceeds from the day’s sales will go to Our Daily Bread, a local organization that feeds those in need. What a delicious way to give back.

Charity Pub Crawl
The Abbey Underground, 6 pm
Having an early case of the Fridays? Then sacrifice your liver to the Friday gods—and actually do some good for the community, too. This pub crawl features a scavenger hunt, all sorts of prizes, tons of free swag and—obvs—drinks! You’ll pretty much be touring bars around the square, drinking and the dollars you spent to get in helps our furry friends in need through the Denton Animal Support Foundation. Get your tickets at dentonslacker.com ($22–$29).

Bone Doggie and The Hickory Street Hellraisers
Dan’s Silverleaf, 8:30 pm
Hey groovy baby, come hang out at Dan’s tonight and ease into your impending weekend. Denton’s Bone Doggie and his crew will do you right. They killed it at the Art & Jazz Fest this year, so we’re sure this show won’t disappoint. It’s big band meets folk meets rock. Bring $7 and your dancing shoes.

Friday, May 13

The Powell Brothers, The Holler Time
Andy’s Bar, 8 pm
This is quite a treat, Denton. Houston’s The Powell Brothers are hitting towns all over Texas and we’re lucky enough to be one of them. They’ll honky-tonk the stage with their Texas country beats, but not before our own Holler Time rocks the stage first.

Sad Art Party Zine Release, Wave Swinger Tape Release
Sprockets, 9 pm
Mix art and music together and what do you get? YOUR FRIDAY NIGHT. Pick up a copy of Sad Art Party’s new zine—which features a bunch of artists who submitted their works to be published—and also pick up a copy of Wave Swinger’s new album, Merciless. You know you’re craving more art and new music—feed it.

Out The Box with Callie Dee & Ritchy Flo
watchonairlive.com, 10 pm
On Air Live is this super cool online radio experience that streams live (hence the name). They have interviews, performances, and radio shows 24/7. If you haven’t checked it out yet, this is a great chance to. Your hosts are interviewing Fort Worth hip-hop artist Smoothvega. Go to watchonairlive.com to listen in!

Saturday, May 14

Bicycle Brewery Tour: Spring Edition
Denton County Transit Station, 12:30 pm
Is there anything more Denton than bicycles and beer? I think not. Pre-order your wristband (19 bucks) to get access to the ride, three beers and a specialty steel tumbler, made just for this event. Don’t have a bike? Don’t fret! Check out Velo Republic for bike rentals.

The Stand Up Comedy Revolt
Abbey Underground, 8:30 pm
I’m not going to throw out any lame comedy jokes to promote this event—it deserves better. Some of the funniest comics on tour right now are hitting Denton hard. And we’re not talking about amateurs here, people. These are award-winning comics and you’ll get to see them for only a $5 cover. Plus, you’ll get to see some local Denton comedians perform.

Market Place Music Series, featuring Autumn’s Amber
Rayzor Ranch, 4 pm
Bring the fam out for this FREE event, featuring local musical talent. Autumn’s Amber will be performing at the Freebird’s patio and The Vince Lujan Project will be rocking at the Mooyah patio. Eat, get some dessert and listen to free music while you’re at it!

Petty Theft
Dan’s Silverleaf, 9 pm
For all you Tom Petty fans, you won’t want to miss this one. If you’re late to the party, Petty Theft is a Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers cover band. Sounds crazy fun, right? It is. They always bring an awesome crowd, so this should be a great show. $10 to get in—get your ticket on Prekindle.

HBSS, Orcanaut, The Designated Mourner
Purple Palace, 8 pm
This is one of those shows that has a little something for everyone. Wanna just thrash about and get your eardrums blown out? Orcanaut’s got you covered. Hankering for something chill, semi-ambient, experimenty and instrumental? The Designated Mourner, from Savannah, Georgia, is just want you’re looking for. Purple Palace: 521 Malone St.

Sunday, May 15

Stack: Overflow!
Andy’s Bar, 9 pm
Crank your #Sundayfunday up a dozen notches this weekend with this performance art/musical show. Think: The Matrix meets 2016. Think: the atmosphere at Andy’s Bar completely changing. Think: Musical Revolution. Trust, it’s gonna be epic.
