Weekend Update 10/5 – 10/8
How’s October treating you, Denton?
While we all love October for its scares and fanfare, it’s important to remember that October is so much bigger than just Halloween. October is also the second Hispanic Heritage (half-)Month (through the 15th) as well as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, both of which will receive attention at the Hispanic Heritage Festival and the Domestic Violence Awareness Month Kick-Off on the square.
As always, this weekend will be filled to the brim with events, some of which overlap on dates and times, so you’ll have to choose your weekend excursions in advance. The multi-day North Texas Comedy Festival is coming to Denton for its first year, utilizing five venues across Denton while featuring over 15 talented DFW comics. There’s also a two-day music and art event at Harvest House that’s sure to be a hit, as well as the revival show of our beloved Glitterbomb family.
But enough small talk, Dentonites. Here’s your full weekend update.
Thursday 10/5
North Texas Comedy Festival 10/5-10/7
$20 weekend pass
Three days. Five venues. One hilarious weekend! There hasn’t been a comedy-centric event this large in Denton since 2016’s Joketopia at the Denton Community Theatre, and we’re excited. 2017 marks the first year for the North Texas Comedy Festival, an event created by local comics across Dallas/Ft. Worth and Denton County. The fun starts with the festival kick-off show at Killer’s Tacos this Thursday at 8 p.m. and goes on throughout the weekend at venues like Backyard on Bell, The Abbey Underground, The Bearded Monk, and The Black Box Theatre. 35 percent of all funds raised will benefit local organizations, like LOL for a Cause, that promote literacy among children. Buy a ticket and have a few laughs — it’s for a great cause! For tickets and more info, please visit https://www.ntcomedyfest.com.

Glitterbomb has been Denton’s favorite team of drag, queerlesque, and burlesque performers for a hot minute, and ever since the untimely and unfortunate closing of Mable Peabody’s, the Glitterbomb community has banded together to find a new home. We’re proud to announce that their new home is Andy’s Bar on the square.
Help welcome the Glitterbomb family break in their new spot this Thursday!

Domestic Violence Awareness Kick-Off
Denton County Courthouse on the Square
6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Did you know October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM)? Join your fellow Dentonites in a moment of solidarity honoring those who have experienced domestic violence.
Domestic Violence Awareness Month (previously known as "Day of Unity") was started by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence in October 1981. This month calls for awareness of victims of domestic violence. One in four women are victims of domestic violence, according to the National Domestic Violence Hotline. DVAM kick-off will be hosted by Denton County Friends of the Family, a local organization that renders aid and support to those who have been affected by domestic violence. A vigil will take place, as well as a Clothesline Project, in which victims will have a chance to decorate shirts that reflect their own struggles with domestic violence, which will be displayed on a clothesline for all to see.
SCRAP Found Art Show
Scrap Denton

SCRAP, Denton’s premier craft stop, will be showcasing donated artwork given to them.
