Weekend Update: 8/11 - 8/14

The second week of August is under way and, sadly, the heat did not dissipate. Keep your cool this weekend and check out the events where you can be gregarious while guzzling, including a free advance screening of Don’t Breathe brought to you by Yours Truly and the last show (le sigh) ever in the old dirty basement.

Thursday, August 11

Dr. Sketchy’s Denton
The Bearded Monk, 7 PM
Drinks + drawing + anime dames—is there a better way to spend a Thursday night? Join Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School, an alternative drawing movement, allowing you, the artist, to draw underground performers while drinking a craft beer or two. This month, models from Titanesque Cosplay will be strutting their stuff in costumes from League of Legends, Kiznaiver, Splatoon, and more!

Ashleigh Stone w/ Tombstone Glen, Warren Jackson Hearne, and Cory Mann
J&J’s Basement, 8 PM
Lend an ear (and maybe a tear or two) to the sweet sound of Ashleigh Stone’s heartfelt lyrics. Accompanied by special guest Tombstone Glen, this Texas native was recently featured on Blue October’s latest album Sway and has appeared as a stand-in pianist for the Austin Symphony Orchestra. Denton’s own Warren Jackson Hearne opens. Oh, and this is one of the last shows at J&J’s, so there’s that.

The Dentonite Presents: Free Advance Screening of Don’t Breathe
Movie Tavern Denton, 8 PM
The Dentonite has teamed up Screen Gems Studios to sponsor a free advance screening of Don’t Breathe, a horror flick about three Detroit thieves who get their kicks by breaking into the homes of the wealthy until . . . See the event page to download tickets, and redeem them by either printing the pass or showing it on your phone. It’s first come, first served, so show up early. (It’ll make for a killer Thursday!)

Friday, August 12

Crochet 101
SCRAP Denton, 4 PM
Calling all crafters! SCRAP Denton is offering a two-hour workshop where they will cover the basics of crocheting, including yarns, hooks, gauges, and the fundamental stitches. If you’ve always wanted to weave your way into the knitting world, this makes for a great prerequisite class. (Or, if you’re a crochet connoisseur who wants to show off their stitching skills, that’s okay too.) Tickets are available through scrapdenton.org

Hagen’s Denton Lamest Birthday Show Madness Show! Don’t Cha Know?
Andy’s Bar, 8 PM
Hey, it’s Hagen’s birthday! (Full disclosure: I’m not sure who Hagen is.) This event is titled “Lamest Birthday Show Madness Show,” but from the looks of the lineup, there will be more madness than lameness. If you’re 21+ and have $7 to spare, put on your party pants and head to Andy’s Bar. Music starts at 8:30.

Saturday, August 13

One Year Anniversary * Party Tat Extravaganza * Beard Contest
The Bearded Lady, Austin St. Truck Stop, 12 PM
In need of some new ink? For their one-year anniversary, The Bearded Lady—a traveling grooming parlor and beard emporium—will be turned into a tattoo shop for a day. Get a Bearded Lady tattoo for $50–$150 (book a spot today!) and you’ll receive special offers and discounts for life. Pan Ector will be out screening tees, a wet beard contest (they will be selling Super Soakers), and there will be an art show hosted by Jennifer Johnston. Show your support for this local business that keeps Denton beard. Bonus: The high is expected to be only 90 degrees!

Get Crafty!
The Bearded Monk, 4 PM
Get crafty—x 2! Drink craft beer (or rootbeer) while painting your growler. Twelve bucks gets you a 32oz. KYD Growler or you can BYOG (Bring Your Own Growler), and it’s just $5 to paint. Karma Yoga Denton is hosting this event and will be giving prizes for the following categories: Most Creative, Funniest, and My Dog Has More Artistic Talent.

Summer of FUN! FUN! FUN! Instameet
West Oak Coffee Bar, 5 PM
Photographers Erin Summerlin and Michael Casillas are hosting an Instameet for all local photographers and Instagrammers. They’re inviting Denton creatives to explore some of their favorite photo spots around the Square, while they showcase their editing skills and show you how to gain more followers. Summer-y props are encouraged, but they ask you to wait to catch your next Pokémon until after the event. Phones up, cameras out—we can get behind that!

Dead Sally, Cheap Haircuts, and Joe Stack & the Ghosts
LiberDIY House, 6 PM
One thing that will seemingly never fade from the music scene is house shows. An unapologetically energetic show will take place around 6 PM courtesy of Austin pop-punk bands Dead Sally and Cheap Haircuts, and Denton’s own Joe Stack & the Ghosts. The show is for all ages, but if you’re drinking, you’ll need your ID. No cover, but donations for the touring bands are appreciated.

J&J’s Old Dirty Basement Show
J&J’s Pizza, 9 PM
If there is one place you should be on Saturday night, it's J&J's basement. What was intended to be the final show before renovations took place will sadly now be the second to last show - FOREVER. (We could go on with the loss of another beloved Denton institution, but we digress.) Show your love for this soon-to-be-consumed music haven and see John Wesley Coleman, Chris Flemmons, Amanda Newton, and Triangulum do their thing. If we're lucky, maybe those performing will share their fondest memories of the old dirty basement. Note: We'll have tissues in tow, because this night will be a tearjerker.

Sunday, August 14

2nd Sunday Yoga Jam
Audacity Brew House, 11 AM
Start your Sunday by centering yourself with chill vibes and good jams. Every second Sunday of the month at Audacity Brew House, Karma Yoga Denton hosts a yoga class featuring live drummers from across the metroplex to benefit a nonprofit organization. This week’s class benefits 7Feathers, a local nonprofit organization that works to serve the community through art and music. Yoga and beer? We’re in.

FWB & Pascall Bar Board Game Night
Paschall Bar, 4 PM
Make Sunday a fun(draising) day and join Paschall Bar for a night of board games and board game themed drinks. (We can only hope they’ll be serving a Candy Land inspired cocktail.) A portion of the bar sales will go to the Friends with Benefits North Texas Area Music Scholarship. There will be a raffle, so bring a few bucks to score some neat prizes. Participants are encouraged to bring their own board games. Don’t forget to try Paschall Bar’s newest drink and our namesake, The Dentonite!

J&J's Very Last Ol' Dirty Basement Show
In the basement, 3 PM
J&J’s Pizza bids adieu to the basement with an all-day event, opening its door on a Sunday to pay homage to their beloved DIY all-ages venue. They will be saying goodbye proper with lots of music, a little comedy, and a few readings by the folks of Spiderweb Salon. If time permits, there is talk of an open mic session. Party starts at 3 PM. Note: We’ll have tissues in tow, because this event will be a tearjerker.
