Weekend Update: August 4-7, 2016

We can’t really believe that August is already here, but it is. Hopefully that means the heat will go away soon (we’re not betting any money on that though). There’s plenty going on this weekend - multiple album release shows, new recurring events to look forward to, and a number of ways to give back to the community.

Check out our selection of events below or on our calendar, and if we there’s anything else happening that we should be aware of, email tiffany@thedentonite.com!

Thursday,  August 4

DCYP Monthly Mixer
Game Changers Sports and Arcade Grill, 5:30 PM
The Denton County Young Professionals host a social mixer every 1st Thursday and this month it’ll be at the new Game Changers Sports and Arcade Grill. If you've been wanting to see what that is all about out, this is a good time to do so as DCYP is also running a school supply donation drive for Health Services of North Texas. Donate to a good cause, mix and mingle with some cool folks, and support a new local business - all in one night.

Wax Logic / Muenster / Kind Beats: A Night of Jazz Hip Hop
The Abbey Underground, 9 PM
The lineup for this show is ridiculous - 14 crazy talented artists coming together to collaborate and bring Denton a night of hip hop and jazz that it isn’t likely to forget anytime soon. It all starts at 9 at The Abbey Underground.

The Bearded Bachs Sessions 1
The Bearded Monk, 9 PM
On the first Thursday of every month you can see The BoomBachs at The Bearded Monk. Each show will have a different opening act. They haven’t announced who that’ll be, but we’re sure it’ll be good. Be there at 9 to find out for yourselves.

Friday, August 5

Skateboard Art Show
PAAC, 6 PM
If art, skateboards, and raising money for charity is your thing, then this is the event for you. Over 20 of the best tattoo artists in Texas are each creating a one of a kind skateboard that’ll be auctioned off, with proceeds going to GDAC. (PS: PAAC is the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center. The Greater Denton Arts Council is the actual body of people in the council, not the building. We know, it's confusing.)

FAB Friday
The Bearded Bonk, 7 PM
Food, beer, music, charity, and raffle prizes all in one event? Sounds like a good time to us. There’ll be 2 stages - indoor and outdoor with a lineup of Too Soft & The Smooth Smells, Matt Grigsby, and Tallgrass. They’ll be taking donations of hygiene items in exchange for raffle tickets and a portion of the proceeds from food purchases will benefit Our Daily Bread.

Shaka / Madaline / One Short / Noogy
J&J’s Pizza, 8 PM
Pizza, free show, and a new Madaline EP - what more could you want on a Friday night? It’s also one of the last shows in the basement before it closes for renovation, so be there while you still can.

Saturday, August 6

BREKFASTFEST2016
304 Springtree St, 8 PM
Eating breakfast food for dinner with all of your closest friends and strangers sounds fun to us. This event, hosted by Glorp Studios, is in its 4th year. Bring either $3 or a breakfast food/drink to get in.

I am Man, I am Monster Album Release Show
Andy’s Bar, 9 PM
Another album is getting released this weekend, this time from I am Man, I am Monster. They’ll close out the show after Wrought of Obsidian and the return to Denton of Casket of Cassandra. $5 gets you into this night of metal.

Megafauna / ABACABA
Dan’s Silver Leaf, 9 PM
Megafauna will be in town from Austin and hitting the stage at Dan’s. That alone is awesome enough. The lineup also includes ABACABA and a recent addition of GOLDENJOY, which increases the level of awesome.

Sunday, August 7

Conor Wallace Album Release Show with The Red Death and Walker Smart
Dan’s Silver Leaf, 5 PM
Conor Wallace adds to the weekend’s list of album release shows and he’ll be joined by The Red Death and Walker Smart. In other words, being at Dan’s on Sunday at 5 will be a really smart decision.

The Bearded Monk’s Open Mic Night
The Bearded Monk, 6:30 PM
Denton has no shortage of open mic nights but we don’t think you can have too many, which is why we’re excited about Joe Coffee hosting a new one at The Bearded Monk. It starts early at 6:30, which gives you plenty of time to drink some beer, laugh at a few jokes, listen to a few songs and then go about whatever your normal Sunday night routine is.

Safe Place Comedy Showcase and Lone Stars of Comedy Tour
Mable Peabody’s, 8 PM
The comedy scene in Denton has been heating up lately and here’s another chance to check out some of the local talent as well as a few comedians from Austin and Houston. Presented by the Denton Comedy Collective and hosted by Dan Danzy, this should be a good way to close out your weekend.
