Weekend Update: June 2 - 5, 2016
By now, we’re all aware of the not-very-anticipated closing of Rubber Gloves (if your Facebook feed isn’t littered with posts about it, then you def need to get out more). All RGRS weekend shows are sold out, so if you're looking for a ticket find a friend who bought too many now. And you know what? This is a great weekend to get out there because it’s the last few days you’ll be able to step into the club FOREVER. In fact, there’s a ton of shit going on this weekend, starting with a mixer, dance party, and art exhibit—and that’s just Thursday! Hey, none of that “I’m broke” business. There are a slew of events that won’t even cost you a penny.
If there’s something you’re doing that we shouldn’t miss out on, hit us up in the comments.
Thursday, June 2
DCYP Monthly Mixer
Bet the House BBQ, 5:30pm
DCYP stands for the Denton County Young Professionals and tonight they’re hosting a meet-and-greet with some of the local citizens and business owners. You don’t have to be a member to attend, just come out, eat some bbq, and hang out with some cool folks. Even better, Bet the BBQ is donating 10% of the day’s sales to Denton Community Food Center.
PDA IV: An Underground Dance Party
RGRS, 8pm
You had us at Dance Party. To make it even more epic, it’s the final dance party at RGRS before the doors close for good. DJ Dreamlover69 & Slush will be keeping those feet bouncing on the ground with some pretty crazy and psychedelic shit. Oh, and it’s free, so #duh.
Into the Light: A Live Dance Installation
Brick Haus Collective, 8pm
This isn’t your average art show, y’all. It’s interactive, so you’ll get to walk around the performers as if they’re a part of the viewing crowd. Wanna bring beverages? You’re welcome to! There’ll also be a DJ set by Snardok.
Friday, June 3
Enclave Eclectic
Sweetwater Bar & Grill, 6 pm
What is pop-up art, you ask? Come find out at this very special (and a very first for Denton) art exhibit benefitting Artist’s Enclave of Denton. A curated selection of art will be showcased in the back of Sweetwater—the entrance is off to the side on Walnut Street. It’s free to get in!
Rock the Basement 4: This Time, it’s Personal
J&J’s Pizza, 7pm
You know how the J&J’s basement shows are usually free? You know how the pizza is delicious? Yeah, there isn’t much of a reason for you to miss this. The fourth installment of the series, this one is special: an entirely unplugged set by all Denton bands.
Continuance
UNT on the Square, 5:30pm
Tonight is the opening reception for a two part art series by OP Collective, a small group of UNT alumni that are working toward a greater exposure of local art. It opens with their personal pieces, followed by pieces by 25 other artists, curated within only a few months. This is a free event and truly a unique one.
First Fridays at the Arts Center: Arts Grants Awards
Patterson-Appleton Arts Center, 6 pm–8 pm
Celebrate everything art every first Friday this season, especially this week when they’ll be announcing grant winners. There will be all sorts of performances by groups and individuals from all over town. Plus, it’s free to get in.
Summer Dance Party with Raised Right Men
Dan’s Silverleaf, 9pm
One of our favorite country cover bands is about to get rowdy with their traditional set of honky-tonk tunes of yore. Get yer cowboy boots on and bring yer hat because this one is gonna make you wanna two-step the night away. Get yer tickets on Prekindle beforehand and save $3. $10 at the door.
Riveting Women Comedy Showcase
Drunken Monkey Denton, 8pm
LMAO, right? This isn’t your brick-wall-90s comedy y’all. This is Denton’s finest women showcasing some hilarious material. As with so many awesome Denton events, the proceeds from ticket sales goes to Denton Friends of the Family Women’s Shelter. Purchase your tickets from www.lolforacause.com/shows (PS: Drunken Monkey is over at Unicorn Lake.)
Saturday, June 4
Leoncarlo Album Release, Jacob Metcalf, Mountain Song
Harvest House, 7pm
This won’t be a show; this will be an enlightenment. Leoncarlo took everyone’s breath away with his 35 Denton performance and now he’s finally got it recorded for us to listen to whenever we want. Joining in celebration is Jacob Metcalf, noted Dallas musician of Fox & the Bird and Dallas Family Band acclaim. You’ll be sad if you miss this one.
2016 DATCU Dash
DATCU Corinth, 7:45am
Get your running shoes on to help support United Way of Denton this Saturday morning. You can either run the 5K or 10K and registration ranges from $20–$40. No matter whether you walk or run, everyone’s a winner and everyone gets a medal. Register before the race to save $5: http://www.datcudash5k.org/sign-up/
Sunday, June 5
Denton Celtic Dancers Community Dance Class
Patterson-Appleton Arts Center, 5pm and 6pm
Get out there and try something new, ya wild kids. For a buck, you can learn some sweet moves and it’ll be broken down into two sessions—the first for the more experienced dancers and the second for the newbies.
